Full width toyota axles?
« on: Feb 12, 2011, 09:05:16 PM »
So i was thinkin id really like to make my stance wider, and i dont want to deal with dana 44 u-joints and axle shafts. Plus my yota axles already have chromolys, lockers, and 4.88s. So the plan is..
-trunnion bearing eliminator kit
-3" wheel spacers all around, or ifs rear end with (2) 1.5"s, Or maybe T100 axle? is it even compatible with the older 8" 3rd member?
-custom backspaced steelie wheels
-chromoly hub gears

Any thoughts? i know the 3" spacers seem excesseive, but ive wheeled the hell out of 1.5s, Hopping, slamming, smashing on em. and yet to have Any problems with them so i figure 3"s wont hurt. i can always upgrade my steering to hiems, although i do   my marlin Highsteer setup

All suggestions and opinions are welcome. Thanks Fellas!   :_order:

You can't go wrong w/ the trunnion bearing elimnator kit, I have it on my truck too and can't even tell I'm not using bearing! 3" spacer....hmm, wouldn't that put too much pressure on your studs?

86bobbedtoy, how are ur trunion bearings is ur camber off? tires wearing on the insides?
I should be good i have arps, but i do run full highsteer and a lockright. i mostly worried about the trunions my toyos had some serious inner wear, i need to get the eliminator kit. Then again they are 30 years old LOL

Full width is highly overrated in my opinion...

A bunch of guys did it to their jeeps up here only to find that they couldn't hardly fit down their favorite trails anymore.

I could see using an IFS rear and spacers on the front to match.
It does, of course look really cool.

Well my yota has almost No weight in the rear and if i can push my tires out more it spreads out my center of gravity, aka a lil less top heavy. it'll keep my tires from popping up a lil less.  Every inch and every pound counts on a toyota. If only there were steel wheel spacers, that would really help add some weight down low. Although to think of it an ifs rearend is probably heavier than a the older style, thats another idea on addin weight down low. Hmm :headscratch:

I hear of people putting water in the tires for competition but never a truck,  would be fun to try.

Okay so looks like im on the prowl for a local ifs housing. then ill order a pair of 3" spacers and sell a pair of my 1.5"s
And as for water in the tires, it just doesnt sound like a real good idea for the highway speeds of 70+mph. or for extended periods of time like wen my yote sits between wheelin trips. But i'll look into it, n report back.
Thanks again guyz    :beerchug:

wheel spacers are dumb. it fags off your pivot point of the tire when you turn, you get a dragging motion to your turning. my buddy ran 3" wheel spacers in the front, and no it didnt do any damage to trunions or steering studs but it didnt "add" a whole lot of width either. Not like my d44/t100 combo. He ended up taking them off cause of performence.

If you want width dont do a cheesy ass wheel spacer. do it right. either swap axles or widen your toy axle. a t100 rear is 66 3/4" wms to wms. a stock toyota front is 55"... even with adding 6 inches of wheel spacers your at 62" maybe 63"

i just  dont see adding 6" of aluminum to your axle. I mean I guess if you want just a little more width but you had 1 1/2 already so you are only adding 3" all together.... :twocents:

I'm running 1.5" spacers, 2.5" backspaced 10" wide wheels and 13.5" wide Iroks.  It's hell on the trunions but does make up for the width problem.

White 3rd Gen 4Runner has a Waggy D44 front, 13.5" wide Iroks and 8" wide regular backspaced (4.25) wheels.

Hell i aint worried about the trunions at all, mine already need replacing so im just gettin the eliminator kit. I mean if i was gonna do it all again, i would of just gone full width in the first place but my toy axles are geared, locked, with chomoly shafts and hub gears. it would be stupid to start all over again. Soo wheel spacers and backspacing are what i need, that an some extra weight from an ifs rear, trussing, skid plate, duals, etc. all that down low gear.
