220v extension cord
« on: Feb 03, 2011, 12:21:30 PM »
I've been looking to build a longer 220v extension cord.  I currently have a 8/3, 10ft cord I made from materials I got from home depot.  I just came accross an RV part store near my house that sells 10/3 in 25ft sections that they use for RV's for only $28.  Anyone know if 10/3 will hold up to a miller175, 220v welder?  for just over a dollar per foot on the 10/3, it beats the $3.66 per foot on the 8/3.  I just want to make sure it won't everheat to cord or cause any problems.

Your welder will have info telling you max amps it pulls, the cord will have a max amps it can handle
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

the cord says it will handle up to 30 amps with 110/250v.  If I remember right, my welder says its max pull is 19.5 amps, and its on a 30 amp breaker.  I'm assuming it'll be fine.  Just wanted a second opinion and see if anyone else is running 10/3 and how it's working for them.

It will be fine, I have a tig welder with a 25 foot cord I made. 10-3, so cord, max pull is like 20amps.

I would have to agree, I mean putting a 30 amps cord on a 30 amp breaker is CLOSE, but technically the breaker should pop at anything over the cables load rating
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

10/3 is good up to 100ft with a 20amp load so a 25ft cord will be no problem for your 175 miller

I ended up getting a 30' 10/3 cord and put my own ends on it.  tried it out this weekend and it works great.  a lot lighter and easier to manage than the 8/3.
