Something may be stuck in the needle valve.

You might be able to flush it out by pinching off the fuel line to the carb; then just as the engine starts to die, releasing the pinch............

Rebuild it! Whe I took mine apart I found all kind of cool things the previous owner did that made the carb run just like that...

I wouldn't worry about the return line, it's doing what it's suposed to and you are getting fuel to the carb.

wheres the fuel filter?  my 86 surged only at idel  but at 23 mile to a gal. i lived with it, lets think ????    egr ?   2000 rpm ur out of idel circute,   there is a power valve in the carb under the fuel bowl, leaking? any other drivability issues ?

the fuel filter is next to the tank. it surges at 2000 rpm when you rev it and hold it  at 2000 rpm .but at a pull when driving  it dont do it. it idles ruff and i have to turn the choke all the way off. were its open all the time because if i dont it well idle high all the time it want idle down
