Water pump blew tonight, WTB quality new one?
« on: Jan 09, 2005, 08:45:16 PM »
The water pump on my turbo motor blew tonight.  Coolant was coming out of the pump.  It was dark but it looked like it was coming out of the front of the pump around the shaft.

I my pump is an aftermarket unit (GMB), been on there since I bought the truck 10+ years.  Anyone know where I can find a quality pump and not some shotty cheap replacement.  I have noticed in the past that aftermarket casting are not always as "nice" as factory pumps.  I do have an old yota pump in my garage, don't know if its any good.  Any way I can test it?

Is there a different pump for the turbo trucks?

Napa has a new one for $40
There in one on ebay that is "new" and claims 30% more flow for $40 + s&h

This sucks because I'm really broke and school starts up tommorow so I'm short on time and cash.  But that's why the Yota is not my primary vehicle anymore, at least I have another vehicle I can drive.

Yours let go the same as mine did, but sounds like you caught it before you warped your head.  I called my mechanic brother, told him to buy me one that would last and he brought up the same one as you have, so I'd hafta recommend buying the same thing.  Don't trust the cheapos, and steer clear of the ebay ones unless they're a stock one.  A cheapo cost me a head and down time,    Nate

i bought a new(as in new, not reman) at vatozone last night...seemed different from the old one on the engine i'm building.  the old one had what looked like a stamped steel impeller that was pretty small, the new one has what looks like a cast steel one that's much bigger.

which one is generally better?  of course i put the new one on the engine since the old one was badly pitted, but it could be nice to know in the long run

Just go over to the dealership.  They're only like $70 NEW from Toyota.  Otherwise, call your local toyota specialty independent service shops and try to find a "World Pack" brand.  They do the casting for Toyota, and many times the pumps just have the Toyota letters sanded off...

Called around to 3 dealers Cheapest one $100, highest $130, Ouch.  Like I said I'm broke.  Looks like either ebay or Napa.  Probably going use Napa

how would I know if I warped the head?

Well, I knew cause when I tried to start it after it cooled off it freewheeled like there were no sparkplugs in.  It dumped all the coolant out so fast the needle barely rose, I drove fifteen miles to work, didn't know it was hot till I hit the hill and it detonated away.  I'd steer clear of Napa stuff too, we go through their stuff like crazy at work.  My gmb was brand new and seemed to be a solid unit.    Nate

If not Napa are there any other options.  I guess I am hesitant to use the GMB since that is what failed.

Didn't it last 10 years before it failed?  My kragen special failed in under five years.  I have a couple of sources I can contact tomorrow and let you know what they say.  If Beck Arnley still does rebuilds their stuff is pretty decent too.  I'll let you know what I find out, but I'd check on those world packs too,    Nate

Thanks everyone for the help

CSK has a Beck Arnley pump for $36 including gasket.  I ordered that one.
