Toyota Design Flaw
« on: Jan 09, 2011, 10:11:38 PM »
What was Toyota thinking when they put the alternator under the power steering pump?  It seems like it would make way more sense to have the power steering pump on the bottom.  Personally I have never had to replace a power steering pump, but it seems like at least once a year I am dropping my bottom radiator hose to pull out my alternator.  If they switched the alternator it would be higher up where it would be more protected from water and if the power steering pump does decide to leak it wouldn't have that dripping on it either.  Also it would be a piece of cake to replace if it does go out.  Does anyone know what toyota was thinking by cramming the alternator where it is such a pain in the ass to get to?

I agree with you and a leaking power steering pump would eventually kill the alternator.

Well never seen that before on the other hand, we 3L diesel guys have another problem as we have the alt below the A/C compresser and its a bit hard to get at aswell. Have to remove the bottom guard plate to make things easy.

Not an expert on this stuff, so lets wait and see what the pro's say

What problem?

I still have my original alternator (86).

Not all trucks had power steering, and I don't think the radiator hoses would be able to go around the power steering pump if it was lower..............

If you think it is such a problem, remount them. Make sure the PS reservoir still the highest part of the system or you will never get the system bled. I would worry more about water crossings then PS fluid.

PPL blow the alts when they run their systems off the tiny toyota alt. You cant expect a lil 4 banger alt to push your 1k amp, 2 12s, chrage ur cell, run your garmin, and still power everything on your truck, at least not for long. I dont ahve any issues with toy alts. I have seen some neglect to maintain their trucks, and allow a leak to drip on them, and yes they fail. But thats the owners fault, not toyota.

I think its a lot easier to check P/S fluid levels on top. If your boiling out your P/S fluid on top of your ALT, fix the leak. Its easy to add a cooler in-line if you need to. My complaint is changing the fuel filter on a 22RE. Was it to simple on the 22R trucks on the frame rail?

i have never had a problem pulling my alternator on my 86 p/u. My oil filter used to a pita but that and changing the starter is a whole lot easier after the sas.
