Anyone swapped a 22R-E into a first gen?
« on: Jan 08, 2011, 03:03:41 PM »
I have a wrecked '91 4Runner and am curious if anyone can give me any feedback on putting a 22R-E into a first gen. Hardest part would probably be the wiring and fuel delivery :dunno:

It's the popular swap for the first gen

Also the w 56 tranny is the swap tranny that u want to use
The first gen transfer case is the only thing you are going to want to reuse

22 re. Re tank , re harness and computer and your old harness to splice into the re harness

Good luck

I did it, not bad at all for the most part. The engine bolts right in, I relocated trans mount cross member brackets on the frame. I used the small EFI fuel tank from a truck. The only challenge for me was the wiring, In order to pass CA. SMOG you need the check eng. light on the dash. I swapped in the 91 dash, or you can wire in the check eng light. You will enjoy the 22RE.  Bob.

Thanks for the feedback. The wreck has been sitting at my folks place since June '07. I am going to trailer it up to my place and go from there. FUTURE project. I will run the 20R for a while. 3RZ would be sweet but, have that wreck with everything there.

Thanks again guys

hardest part was wiring up the cluster as i switched to an sr5 cluster. only problems i had were the gas tank was too big and the tranny crossmember. its a very nice swap to have done.

If you have a 20r I would lean towards just rebuilding the 20r.  I have run 22re, 22r and 20r and I have been the happiest overall with the 20r.  My carb runs very well at all angles, which would be the only reason I would go to EFI.  My buddy has a 22re and I can pull hills on the highway better than he can with the 20r even though he has good gearing and I don't.

I do have a '94 I am swaping the 3rz into...

I just found a deal on a 22RE intake, throttle body, wiring harness, and computer. I should pick it up this weekend and clean it up and put it in very soon. I have an 84 with a 22R.
