duel cases
« on: Dec 30, 2002, 01:15:21 AM »
:help:

I have a 87 Toyota with an aluminum 5 speed and want to run duel x cases. A freind of mine has the x case for a cast 4 speed and a x case for an aluminum 5 speed. Which one do I need to buy? He will sell me either one I just need to know which one I need or which one is better. I've heard there's only one you can use but not sure which one that is and how to tell them apart. One thing I heard is I need the top shift x case. Is the top shift case from a cast 4 speed or aluminum 5 speed? Please help and thanks in advance.

Is the 5 speed case from a fuel injected truck or carb? If EFI use it aslong as its 88 or older. If carbed use the one of of the 4speed:up:

Well I have an 87 carbed truck. I don't know how to tell them apart. Can someone post pics of the 2 different cases so I can see the difference between the two?

Thanks!

It is either a gear driven or chain driven case. (from the website)
Gear

Chain

There is a chain driven case that drives on the same side as the gear driven case. The shifter will come out the top of the tcase or the tail housing of the transmission.
The other thing you need to know is if it is 23 or 21 spline. That should be easy if it is apart already ;)

The chain drive cases came only on auto trans in 87. What you will nee to find is any gear driven case after 81. the best to get would be a top shifting case that came from an EFI truck.  Your truck may have a forward shift case in it now, or a top shifter like in the top pic on Cruzilla's post.

If you can only find a forward shifting case Marlin does sell the conversion kit. It could also be a good time to put in a short throw shifter.

If your stock case is forward shift you can leave it in as the crawl box and put the top shift in the rear. If you have a top shift case, then you can build the new case as the crawl box and put it between.

Or I could be wrong and the mediction is talking.
