2wd Transmission?
« on: Dec 29, 2002, 07:20:48 AM »
Will a 2wd tranny (with tail housing removed) bolt up to the tail housing of a 4wd tranny and transfercase?

85 4runner. Nothing Special...Gears, Lockers, Tires and Suspension. Oh yeah and I actually know how to work on and drive it. 4 wheeling is becoming to popular...If you're some wanna be smuck stay on the pavement.

I am in the process of tryin to swap this also...I have a 2wd w56 and and 4wd w56...my 4wd died so I put em side by side and I do see that the output shaft is totally different...I pulled the tail housing off both and they are the same inside...excet fo the output...so you will have to pull the ouput from the 2wd and replace it with the output from the 4wd tranny...the 4wd output is female and the 2wd is male...so dig in
I sent email and faxes to marlins shop but no one answers them...will try 1 last time after this weekend...then go elsewhere for my stuff... :dunno:

Can't answer for the fax, but Mike has school, and we all know Marlin is busy. However this site can have alot of qustions answered by some of the people who have asked the same question, or done the mod your thinking of. It just so happens you may be the first to do what you want.

When you get this done you can help others with there problems and be one of the Marlin purists, and help others out.

Now that we all work together and help each other out, Marlin can spend his time getting our orders together and comming up with new stuff to make our trucks better.

Just my medicated ramblings.

Any idea if this would also apply to 4WD and 2WD G54 trannys from carbed trucks ?  I have 2 '84 4WD trucks and am parting  an '84 and  '85 2WD p/u's.  If the 2WD trannys are worth keeping, it'd be nice to know.  I don't have a 4WD tranny out to compare to the 2WD one.

I have no idea on that...this is tough enough just doing this swap...I would just bust em open and look at each one side by side and do a tooth count on each one...on mine they have 2 sets of gears that have a different count on em, different by only 1 tooth, but swapping the entire guts is the only way to insure that they are set up and mesh correctly...
I am making a press so I can complete my swap, must have 2 and 3 finger pullers, with long grabbers, as well as a press, snap ring plires and more....hope to have it done in a week or so....time is my issue.....very limited... :sob: :sob:
