Hydro Assist on a DD
« on: Nov 05, 2010, 01:50:15 PM »
My question is how can I put together a reliable hydro assist for a light DD. I don't drive it too much (~500miles/month) but I do occasionally take long drives for travel and I do drive to and from trails.

Plus, where can I get a good rebuild kit for a 96/98 IFS box?

$180 for just the ram and hardware.

Now their shafts are only .625". Most others are .75". Is there a concern with this? I know PSC has an excellent reputation and I have no problems with running their stuff.

Just keep in mind a single ended ram will have more power on one side of the ram (extending).  So a smaller dia. piston will help compensate (but is weaker).  A double ended ram would solve the problem.  Bigger bores require more flow, so higher flow pumps are required as well as coolers, and bigger reservoirs.  All said, I run a 2" bore, 1" piston 7" stroke, GM pump, Toy box, ATF and have no problems.

That makes sense, more power on the extending stroke. I'm running 37s and I'm looking for something to take the strain off my steering box. A double ram would be cool but overkill. I will put/make a larger reservoir and large cooler in (I have a trans cooler somewhere). The line will probably be made by an tractor store in town.

Should I look into using hiems instead of tie rod ends?

I use heims, it depends on preference and travel, use what works.  If you use heims, in single shear, make sure to use some kind of safety washer, in case of failure.
