Valve Adustment - Aftermarket Cam?
« on: Sep 28, 2010, 12:39:12 AM »
I decided to adjust my valves on my 87 4runner w/ a 22RE.  I had never done this before, but it seemed simple by looking at the FSM and Haynes manual.  I went by the FSM and adjusted lash to factor specs while hot (.008 on intake & .012 on exhaust).  However, its now knocking. :headscratch:  It ran, idled and drove the same - just knocked and didn't go away like the wifes malibu (which I come to understand is piston slap, so I know that's different, but that what it reminded me of)  After the first time I did it, I thought I did something wrong, so I checked the timing and re-adjusted...buttoned it all back up and same thing ???  Could I be doing something wrong?  Could it possibly have an aftermarket cam in it with different adjustment specs?  Is there a way for me to easily determine if its a stock or aftermarket cam?  Can I adjust the lash to eliminate the knocking.

I like diesels, but don't want my 4runner to sound like one.  someone school me on this

did you do it with the engien warm at operating temp? if not, your valves are now too tight

Ha, i already modified my post to mention that i did it hot or "operating temp" cause i thought someone would ask that.  I did it per the FSM exactly.

also if your valve cover gasket is squished too far down, you will have the rocker arms knocking on the splash gard inside the valve cover.  had it happen to me one time :gap:

very informative thread right there - thank you, superyota - that one didn't come up while searching...I bet all the new guys say this.
My first reaction after watching that video is that mine sounds pretty similar, but its hard to tell from a video.  I did get a new gasket kit, but only used the squish washers since my gasket still looked pretty good.  However, now that I know that could be the cause, I will swap it out  I'll also look for grooved and worn adjusting screws.

As far as the correct lash - i've seen recommendations all over the place.  .006&.008, .006&.009, .007&.010, .007&.011, .008&.012  not to mention the whole operating temp or cold issue.  Is there really a "correct" lash or are there too many variables and I need to just play with it and see what works best for my motor?

i'll post up what I find once i swap out the valve cover gasket.

I use .007 & .011 cold on a stock 22RE cam.

Some aftermarket cams are .010 hot on the exhaust (in which case I'd use .009 cold)

i've run 3 different aftermarket cams and all three  i went with .007 and .011.  never had any problems or abnormal noise.  as for hot or cold, i have always done it hot/warm.  i've never been able to do it hot because its simply too hot, so i let it cool enough to be able to handle.

When I first got a Toyota I set the valves as per the FSM and they clattered like crazy.

Like others have posted, I set mine to .007 and .011 cold. At first I thought they would be too tight and not close completly once the engine got hot so I rechecked once hot. I don't remember the measurement but there was clearance and I have never had a problem.

I had a 86 4Runner with over 450 K miles and my current 88 has over 415 K so .007 and .011 cold isn't going to hurt your engine. Way quieter than setting per FSM.

Yup, you should see the inside of my valve cover  :gap:  Went with stock cam settings and it clattered with the bigger came.  Dropped to a snug .007 and .011 and it's quiet and smooth!

it did get quieter by adjusting to .007 & .011 and insalling a new valve gasket, but its still louder than I feel it should be.  I got to thinking that the timing could have an effect on it.  Am I thinking right?  So, I rechecked it and it was a little advanced that it should be so, I played with the idle and timing to get it to specs and plan to recheck the valve adjustment.
