When I first got a Toyota I set the valves as per the FSM and they clattered like crazy.

Like others have posted, I set mine to .007 and .011 cold. At first I thought they would be too tight and not close completly once the engine got hot so I rechecked once hot. I don't remember the measurement but there was clearance and I have never had a problem.

I had a 86 4Runner with over 450 K miles and my current 88 has over 415 K so .007 and .011 cold isn't going to hurt your engine. Way quieter than setting per FSM.
