22re air valve.... CA smog tech question
« on: Sep 23, 2010, 02:01:34 AM »
Is the air valve under the intake manifold considered part of the pollution control equipment?

Think mine just failed because the idle went up to 1200 rpm after warm up (think it's the electric heater inside)

I'd like to just remove it so I can raise the AC compressor a little and then add a 2nd alternator under the AC compressor.....

thanks

If it's idling at 1200prm, the timing or the TPS setting are way off.

or the air valve failed like it did 15 years ago (and it cost $140 then, don't want to know what they go for now).................

I just want to know if the CA smog police consider the air valve smog equipment.................

I don`t know if its considered smog equipment, but a new one is around 200 dollars.

A quote from Haynes Emissions Control Manual:

"The air injection system introduces oxygen (fresh air) into the hot exhaust gases when the engine is running. This promotes further oxidation (burning) of the unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the exhaust, which reduces HC and CO emissions, respectively the oxygen in the injected air combines with carbon monoxide to form carbon dioxide, a harmless gas, and it unites with hydrocarbons to produce water, in the form of vapor."

If you are talking about this then yes it is. Even if it isn't what you are talking about I would still say it needs to be there and has something to do with emissions.

Nothing to do with air injection............

It's to raise the idle speed (or to keep the idle from being too low) when the engine is cold by letting extra air bypass the throttle plate.

You can compensate by having a slightly raised idle speed at normal temp, so that when the engine is cold it's not too LOW.

I'd rather remove it if it's non functional, but will leave it in place (although non-functional) if it's considered smog equipment.

How about that..............

 :nerv:

The air valve is fine  (still wonder if it's considered pollution control....)

The idle speed screw vibrates out increasing the idle speed.

The strange thing is that it does it on the way to Bakersfield (from LA), and while I'm in Bakersfield.

But the idle speed doesn't change when I'm driving back to LA, nor in LA.................

Figure that one out.............

IAC valve is part of smog inspection, all emission items should be listed under hood, but not for sure if you still have the sticker. a smog shop is required to have a book with all emission control devices listed for each vehicle requiring a bi anuall smog inspection.

It's not a IAC valve.

It's an air bypass valve to raise the idle speed when the engine is cold.

not familiar with another valve that does the same thing as the IAC valve.  If you figure out the factory/field term let us know now I am curiouse.

It's called an Air Valve

It's a bi-metal type like the one on Page 6:

I would say that is part of the smog equipment, toyota and this part of intake sorta suck if you ask me.  It meters air based on inputs including the mass air flow.  Will a smog guy actually take that :pokinit: apart to make sure it is not blocked off, I would like to think as long as emissions are good and timing you would be good.  After thinking hope you didn't think I was being a smart ass, if so sorry about that.  Always considered that entire assembly the volume air mass meter.

It is considered to be smog equipment.
