Auto to Manual Hub Conversion on 87 IFS
« on: Sep 03, 2010, 09:19:48 PM »
I am in the process of converting my 87 4runner to Manual Aisins from my stock auto hubs.  I have searched around on more than one forum and have only found parts and pieces on how to do it.

I have taken apart most of the hub, but am stuck at the part where you find the torx screw.  I seem to have a clutch ring of some sort that I cannot get off.  For some reason my situation doesn't seem to add up to what is shown on my haynes manual and on 4x4wire.com.  Basically, I'm looking for a step by step with more detailed pictures?  I'll try to post pictures tomorrow on what my situation looks like right now.

Also, I purchased used hubs, but still need to some parts to complete the conversion.  I've found that I need to get a plate washer, 2 spindle nuts, and one lock washer for each side.  Is this correct?  And, more importantly, does anyone have Toyota part #'s for these items?

Thanks in advance!
~Josh

Marlin sells them,$8.50 per side

Thanks for referencing a portion of the FSM, OOPS!  I actually have this, but I keep putting off printing it, so I always forget about it.  It looks like page FA-35 is what I'm interested in.  Even though I'd like to support Marlin I'd also like to get the project done tomorrow, so can anyone give the toyota part #'s?

What is the trick to getting the oil seal off the back of the hub to be able to remove the inner wheel bearing?  The FSM manual says pry with a large screwdriver, but brute force is not doing the trick even with a block of wood used as leverage.

Anyone know of a trick?

found a trick:

put the hub and rotor back on the spindle with all other guts out and temporarily put the spindle nut back on then pull towards you, which leaves the nut, inner wheel bearing and hub seal behind....viola, done

This process is waaayy better than the large screwdriver method.

I believe that the flat washer part # should be 90214-42030

Take a brass punch and tap out the bearing race, it will remove the race, bearing and seal all at once
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?
