Bad noise
« on: Jul 05, 2010, 05:40:25 PM »
Well wheeled this weekend and something went wrong... I have a noise that sounds like a diesel truck idling that comes from the bellhousing area.  It does it on decel and hardish accel.  When I push in the clutch the rattling diminishes and is barely audible.  Any ideas before I have to pull the trans out? Also in between shifts, as soon as the clutch is pushed in it rattles and when I get it into gear and let it out, it goes away.  Otherwise it shifts fine and everything is good.

It is weird because the clutch feels normal and grabs normal.  The engine runs perfect and oil pressure is the same as always.  The engine is a 25k mile 3rz and the trans is a Marlin built w59/56.  The clutch is weird though, before this happened I would get random screech noise when taking off, once in a blue moon.  I guess this can all be a bad clutch.

Sounds like one of the bearings (throwout or pilot) may be giving up..

Haven't dropped the trans out.  Don't really have room to do it at my house.  So I am in a bind now.

Well the problem was found.  A fly wheel bolt sheared off and was having a hayday inside the bellhousing.  No real damage though.  And all of the other flywheel bolts were ridiculously loose.  So as of now I need to find some money and get'er going again.

Well I am in Texas right now but I am going to drop the flywheel and clutch down at Marlin to see if anything needs to be addressed. Besides that I am reworking the motor mount so it is stiffer and won't separate, then seals and get that damn bolt out somehow.  I hope to have it ready this next weekend.  We'll see.  Maybe if Joey comes by to lend a helping hand??

OK well after some awesome help from Marlin and Big Mike I am back on track with a new flywheel, new bolts, rear main, pilot and t/o bearings and a motor mount.  The flywheel banged up the crank a little so I need to do some careful filing and honing to get it all smoothed out to mount the flywheel.  Weew its a lot of work, but doable.
