« on: Jun 23, 2010, 05:37:45 AM »
hey just wrecked my wifes car, she might let me buy he an older 4runner but the she hates stick so i found a 22re w/auto trans for cheap but he said that the trans needs rebuilt, how hard would this be and what specialty tools maybe required? never really delt with transmission internals especially auto's

I've never personally rebuilt one but I did have one and had it rebuilt a couple times. The reason it had to be redone is that when rebuilt they only did the trans and not the tcase, they share fluid when when rebuilding make sure to do both at the same time.

I would just look for a used auto Trany, I have seen them for as little as $50 on here so even if it doesn't last that long it wouldn't kill ya  :dunno: I have an auto in my 87 that I was planning on swapping but left it in so my lady could drive it.  :driving:

I have looked into this and heard different things.

The issue I have with rebuilding an auto is it often time needs special tools and what not that can be hard to fab up on your own. I have rebuilt and made tools for several manuals, but never an auto.

I called around to several local shops, and they all stated that the a40f is a poor casting and often time the bearings won't press in and out well and priced me 1600 for a 100% new trans, with new housing. Weather this is true or not i don't know.

Enjoy!
If you see it, its for sale.

It was a long time ago but I think it was $1200.00 to rebuild both.

Hell, I have one I was gonna sell you cheap, right here in Texas, but since all we do is cobble together rigs, I guess I'll pass.

Just kidding, where in TX are you?  I'm up near Wichita Falls.

I just traded my 85 5 speed for a 86 automatic for my wife. The auto was rebuilt a few days before i got it costing 2200.00......ouch. My previous 91 4runner was slightly over 3G when it was done.
