94 to 86 engine/trans swap
« on: May 03, 2010, 03:45:36 PM »
I just bought an 86 4runner with a bad engine. It has a 22re with and automatic transmission. I found a 94 4runner with a good 22re and a 5spd. The plan is to swap both engine with trans into the 86. My question is, will this be a comparable swap? Will the pedal assembly bolt right up to the 86 body. imp sure the crossmember will be different. and what about the wiring. Will the wiring harnesses be the same? I know ill have to swap ecu's but how about everything else. Im not very familiar with the 22re's so forgive my stupidity.

ok heres the deal peday assy will bolt into yours the crossmember will ve dif and possibly your rear d shaft um the wiring its not as easy as jus switching ecu's but if you put your engin harness on the new motor ant tranny you can trick your ecu basicly you need your computer to think its in either neutral or park otherwise it wont start you can achieve this by pulling the nueteal safety switch off of your auto and splicing the wires together the only down to this way is that ur runner will start in gear with out pressing the clutch if you want the manuel ecu your either gonna have to switxh the entire harness and with it being a first gen runner to third gen truck plugs arent gonna march up an stuff if you want a conversion harness made so you can get the best of both worlds shoot me a pm and well get ya fixed up...o one other thing make sure to use the knock sensor that goes with your ecu the plug may fit on the other but theres diff knock sensors so use the one from which ever ecu you use hope this helps  ,

i don't think the pedal assembly is going to work 2 different body styles not a big deal. you can get the pedal assembly from any 84-88 truck or 84-89 4runner. the crossmember everything will bolt right in. the driveline may be different but one from a 5speed 84-88 std cab short bed or 84-89 4runner will work for the back.the bast way to do the wiring take all the efi stuff from the 86 and put it on the engine going in you will need basically the block and head from the 94 everything else take from the 86 exhaust manifold, distributer, upper and lower intake, all the intake piping, airbox, mass air flow and engine wiring harness its a very easy swap. pull the kick panel off the passenger side unplug the ecu and the under the dash harness from the harness going to the engine thru the fire wall and you can pull the harness thru the fire wall and the whole harness you need will come off with the upper and lower intake. im not sure where you are but im in washington and i have a couple pedal assemblies laying around if your close you can have one.

ur wrong on that the pedal assy is the same between runners and trucks 83 to 95 but u can put ur intake on the new motor i didnt think bout that the only problem with the pedals is veing auto to 5 speed the firewall will need to be drilled for ur slave  cylinder the cabs were punched the same the indentation is there beside ur brake booster u cus have to make the hole and the top holes on ur pedal assy may not line up w aneything bc the auto had 2 less  bolts than the manual jus drill and nut and bolt them i even used a 94 truck pedal assy in my 95 t100 theres so much the same between all yotas
