10" Travel shocks
« on: Apr 18, 2010, 06:01:42 AM »
All right I'm doing a SAS on a 1993 Extended cab. I'm doing it on a budget so I plan on using waggy springs and using F-250 shock towers. The question is I aquired some Rancho shocks to use in the front they are RS 5143 and have 10" of travel would they work ok with stock waggy springs. I know most people use 12" or 14" travel shocks but I just want to know what you guy's think. Also I live in central Pa so I wont be running all those extreme trails you guy's have out west. Thanks for any input.

x2..

10 inch is way too little in the front. On my old 4runner which was pretty low, i had f250 shock towers and only 14" shocks worked for it
RIP Kyota.... you are the man

I had AllPro springs front and rear, and they moved pretty dare good. On the front I mounted the shocks in the factory posion on the axle. And had bump stops set to zero arch for the springs. Under compression I had 1/8" of shock shaft showing, under full droop I had a full 10" of shaft showing. So I guess it would work but good luck mounting it that close to dead on. Go get some 12"s and make life easy for yourself.

i'm running the allpro extreme 4" kit with 10" shocks up front and havent had any issues and the travel is great for the more mild to moderate trails i drive on here.
84 longbed, lc eng. top end kit, dual cases w/ 4.7 in rear, arb's front w/high pinion and rear with v6 diff., 5.29's w/ 35s, all-pro long travel 4" and much more

There are more than a few factors with that one, dont worry about that. When setting up your suspension, set your up travel with the shock and bump stop, at that point droop is just iceing on the cake. If at some point you think travel is limited by the shock length the you can re-approach it.

i just went out and took a tape measure to it and it's right about 7" but at the moment there's no motor in the truck so i'm gonna say 6" normally.  I'm also running all-pro shock hoops.  I did look at marlins kit and looks like they go with 12" unless specified so i'd have to guess you'd be safe with 12" shocks as well.

I'd say with the motor it would be more like 5"

I'm running 14's in the front, 3" uptravel, 11" downtravel and max them out. My front shocks act as limit straps. If anything I need 16's.
RUF btw.
