How to disable airbags
« on: Apr 17, 2010, 07:26:14 AM »
So I'm getting my donor vehicle for my 3rz swap :beerchug: Its a 1998 4runner. : :flamer:

The airbags didn't deploy in the accident, and I am affraid they could "go off" at anytime now?

Anyone know how to safley disable them?  :inthedark: :psss: :shocking:

open up your steering wheel being very careful not to even  sit in front of it. then disconnect the cable. then take it outside and hook the leads up to a battery.   BOOM!!!

While they can go off with static electricity (not likely) the best way is to disconnect the battery, then disconnect the electral plugs going to the bag at the steering colum, all air bag related wiring is yellow in the Tacomas or 4Runners. It is easy to spot. After that you do.... wait for it.....wait for it.   "NOTHING"

Do not open the bag up, do not set it off. Yes I suppose in the perfect cirucumstances it could go off, but when it does Im fairly certain you won't have a "PRETTY" steering wheel anymore. I've been driving around with a Taco dash and steering column and wheel for 9 years and it fine. All I've done is rip all the air bag crap out of the car except the wheel it's self.

Thanks

The drive train is still good so I want to start the engine before I pay for it and make sure all is good.

Then drive it onto trailer and around home a little before parting it out.

There are certain peramiters that cause an airbag to deploy, if it didn't in the accident it won't when just sitting there. Speed vs. deceleration rate vs. damage amount are all factors that cause them to deploy.

:inthedark: ok so I cut the yellow taped wire under the steering column and the one in the yellow loom on the

passenger side. I hooked up the battery and the dome light and door beeper came on but the engine wont turn

over now? oh and the insturment cluster seems to have been stolen. so was wondering, do the air bag wires

need to be a complete circut? Or does the insturment cluster need to be installed?

I dont have any experience nor an "OBD II" reader yet to diagnose.

Would just like to get the deal done. Been going back and fourth with seller way to long.

Thank you, Capt. Crawler :smack: :beerwhack:

The owner did drive it since accedent and ran fine. Dont see any reason why shouldn't be an easy fix. of course I checked all the fuses and looked for any obvious loose connections. :willynilly: :hammerhead:

I didnt say cut the wire I said disconnect the yellow wires. As in pull the connector apart, as for it not starting, there are some times vehicle alarms from the factory under the drive seat that when disconnected will not allow the vehicle to start.
