33's with 4.10 gearing?
« on: Apr 14, 2010, 01:00:51 AM »
I have a stock 85 efi pickup and I am on tight budget.  I used the truck mostly for cruising and going fishing.  My questions are:

I am planning to run 33x10.5 bfg a/t, is stock gearing ok?  Or should I stick with 31?  Because the tire weight from a 31 to a 33 is only a 5 pounds difference. I know the rule is 4.88 for 33's, but is it over kill for 33x10.5?

If I run the 33's will the stock birfields be ok?

any feedback will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Yes to all.  It will be a bit slower, but you'll be fine.

it would work with a 5 speed but I wouldn't dare with an automatic.

5th will almost be useless.............. (no hills, or against the wind)

Thank you for the feedback, it sounds like I should stick with the 31's.

I think the narrower tire will help, less rolling resistance.  I have 31's on my 83 and swapped my buddys 33's on and it was a dog but doable and 5th was useless.  When I put my 31's back on it felt like a trophy truck for a day now its slow again.  Your clutch will be happier with the 31's.

I would keep the 31's because it doesn't sound like you need the 33's.  And 4.88 are a little on the low end for my DD 4runner, with 33" BFG at's

...why buy when you can build?

i ran 37s stock gears and it wasnt too bad, just really hard on the clutch, i also ran 33s on the same truck and it was perfectly fine.

i say go for it, i dont know why people say 5th is useless i used 5th on the highway with 37s just fine.

22r 5th will be rarely used but with a 22re motor there is a little more hp so with 33's you will get more use. I ran 33's on my 84 22r and my buddies 85 22re would pull me on the highway. I wouldn't worry much running 33's but if you don't need them then why get them. It sounds like you are ok with 31's so you may consider sticking with them.

im running 33s with 4.10s and a 22r. If you can stick with 31s, do it. mpgs suck and 4th to 5th suck aswell. Its bearable though.
