Is the L52HD as strong as the 5 speed in the Taco?

nah, it's not quite as strong.  it uses a G54 gearset which is somewhat weaker than a W56, i think teh W59 is a little stronger than the pickup tranny

however it's quite a bit stronger than any of the other L series.  a W or G or R tranny is a better idea in anything but a '79-83 truck or something where you need a short tranny like a jeep that a L52 would come in handy

isn't the L52 the same as a G52 transmission internally?  i thought i've heard that somewhere...

The 4 cyl W59 is a updated cousin of the 85-91 W56.
Because it has a 3mm wider input bearing, and greater helix angles on the input and countershaft constant run gears, it makes it stronger than the W56 A,B,and C trans.

By fitting the G54 gear set with the wider input bearing and greater helix angles on the input and countershaft constant run gears in a cast iron case, I have had great results.

Yes kyle_22r, the early G52 trans that uses the B32-14UR bearing is the same gear set as the L52 however, it has an updated reverse gear set.
