Cruiser Questions
« on: Apr 01, 2010, 05:28:07 PM »
So Im thinking on putting some Fj60 components in my pickup, i.e. splitcase transfer case, front and rear axle....

I read somewhere when you put in 5.29 gears in, you have grind a bunch... True or?...

Is there an adapter to mate a mini truck box in front of the splitcase?

Grinding on a Cruiser gearset with 5.29s is only necessary on the rear end. With the c-clip shafts, the cross pin has to be able to slip in and it won't fit without grinding on the ring gear a bit.

As for an adapter to run the split case behind the mini crawl box, we have that adapter for $599. I run one in my FJ60.

Coolness! Whats the strength of a rear axle with it being C clip?

Always loved your 60 btw!

Thanks. The rear axle isn't bad but once you get up over a 35, it is questionable. Poly Performance does sell chromo shafts which definitely help. I went a different route with my 14 bolt.

Yeah I saw the extended version of your build on Ih8mud and It looks pretty trick, but I think I would do something like baxters build on here, FJ80 full float outers with all the breaks and stuff with the FJ60 housing and diff. Would I still need to grind the 5.29's if they were full float axles??

Sorry for the newb like questions...  :gap:

indeed you will have to grind a few teeth to get the cross pin past the ring gear..    as far as strength goes though, dont let the cruiser stuff fool ya. its tons strong.....  a rear 60 series cruiser axle with a proper traction bar should handle 37-39s all day long hammering on it..  a good buddy who i helped set up the 5.29s in his hj-61 with a rear full floater rear axle has beat on his truck for years now and hasnt had a problem yet..  he just disassembled his rear diff to re-gear to 4.88s and the gears are still in ok shape..    i believe his truck weighs in at around 7000 pounds fully loaded when he goes on his expeditions...   the key here is to make sure that traction bar is installed. there definitelly has been known to be a few broken cruiser pinions out there without one...

as well, you are gonna realize what a pig it is to put that cruiser drivetrain in your truck and not have it hang down a whole bunch..  the cruiser tranny and splitcase is wide and big and makes it tough to get that tucked up under those pickups...    i originally tried mocking up a 3b diesel and 5speed/splitcase under my 82 pickup and without a whole pile of cutting and hacking i went with pickup stuff..  this being said i really want someone to prove me wrong and do this swap and do it well...

Can I get some dimensions of the splitcase from anybody? Or pics would be nice! Im needing to know how far the rear output hangs down, is it inline with the front output?

Freds40, if your looking at your toybox, about how far down does the rear output hang compared to the bottom of the toybox? is it above? Below? Level with? That would be so useful! Thanks in advance!

No you do not have to grind the 5.29:1 gear set for use in the front or the FF rear.

Sorry it took me a bit. The front output sits just a bit lower than the bottom of the crawl box. The lowest point of the Split Case is roughly 2" lower than that.
