a few questions if I may. Was the oil clean or where there metal flakes? any idea as to condition, spin freely, shift easy etc? Lastly, I understand you bought it grab the transfer, what was the reason the original owner pulled the trans?

I am in San Diego and have an 83 that is shot. The L52 only came in 83 trucks. This could be a good find to keep my rig rolling.

I am willing to come up and take a look if its available.

thanks

The oil wasn't brand new but it didn't have metal flakes it was a medium brown no water in it no sludge. It shifts smoothly it spins freely I bought it off some guy in big bear he bought to put in his truck but he said his driveshaft was too short and he didn't want to do the work. I don't know what he was trying to put it in. If you are still interested I'll make it easier for you I meet you somewhat halfway in temecula PM me with with your number.

The L52 transmission is the solid cast iron case without the removable bellhousing.  It was in the Toyota 4x4 trucks from 81-83.  I have the same one in my 81 trekker. :)

I was baseing my limited knowledge on the http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/ site listing various engine, trans, transfer, and axle info. The one in the pic is like mine in my 83. I appreciate the added info.

By the way, money is in!!

I saw that site too.  The information there is different than what I have been given from the local transmission rebuilding shop.  According to the info sheets I was given the 2WD trucks had the L45 & L48 transmissions in them from 81-83.  The 4WD trucks had the L52 transmission from 81-83.  I have sen the company an email to ask what a L50 is and from what year as it is not listed in any of the info sheets I have from them.  I will repost here when I have a clarification.  This is a question that I have been asked before, so I will get it answered as soon as possible.

So after calling the local transmission shop and the Toyota dealer to clarify this transmission issue yesterday, I have come up with this.  Many of these transmissions were used in the cars as well, but I am only observing the truck applications for this posting. There are still some things I am looking to clarify in regard to these transmissions, but this list should help everyone.  There is one way to check, providing you have original equipment.  The firewall VIN tag has color, trim, "A", and transmission codes on it.  The 1983 2WD
Mojave I had had the W52 transmission code as the last 3 characters at the end of the list of codes.
I will try to add more information to this list in the future and will post it in the tech section.

1. No one knows of or has any knowledge of a L50 transmission.
2. The L52 5 speed transmission was used in the trucks 81-83.
3. The L48 4 speed transmission was used in the 81-83 trucks. (still waiting for definitive proof)
4. The W52 5 speed transmission was a RWD transmission used in the 2WD trucks late 81-83.  Most likely 82-83 model year only since the input shaft for this truck is listed only in 82-83.
5. The L42 4 speed transmission was a RWD transmission used in the 74-80 trucks. This transmission was used for the 2.2 liter engines.
6. The L43 4 speed transmission was used in the 79-80 trucks. This transmission was used with the 2.4 liter engine.
7. The W50 5 speed transmission was a transmission used in the trucks from 75-78
