another question.... on the dual ultimate crawler set up, does it matter rather or not the 4:70 gears are in front or in the rear?..
in other words, i have stock transfer case gears.... if i purchase marlin crawler dual t case adapter, can i bolt it on with no side affects, or will the torque be to great on the t case? follow me?... HELP!!!!!!!!

We do not recommend putting the 4.70s in the front case unless you use a 23-spline version of the dualcase adapter and run a 23-spline input gear in the 2nd case. If you go 4.70 in the front case and then 21-spline 2.28 in the 2nd case, then please drive the vehicle with care while in 1st gear Ultimate.

We've seen numerous 21-spline input failures, and actually when we first got the 4.70 gears back in '97, it was convinent to be able to sell complete Crawl Boxes with 4.70s already installed. Then you could just basically "bolt-in" an Ultimate setup.....and thats when we started busting up 21-spline inputs. The first 5 or whatever Ultimate Crawl Boxes we sold all came back and we had to eat it. I think we ended up building complete 4.70 transfercases and a complete 2.28 Crawl Box and assembling the two together and then returning it as a complete Dual Case Ultimate, not an Ultimate Crawl Box. We ended up wasting alot of time and money there, and hopefully you can avoid that too....

so i take that the 23 spline input is a whole bunch stronger huh?.... does this change the over all ratio or does it stay the same?.... .... when tearing into the internals of a transfercase, are they as intimidating as they look?....

So far no one has ever been able to break a 23-spline input gear. It is stronger than the mainshaft of the transfercase.

Quote
does this change the over all ratio or does it stay the same?
No, it is the same ratio, 2.28:1. Also aftermarket gear sets are availble in 21- or 23-spline variants as well.

Marlin Crawler is the only company in the world who offers the 23-spline Turbo Input as a Total-Spline™.

Quote
when tearing into the internals of a transfercase, are they as intimidating as they look?
No, not at all. The gear drive t/case was designed sometime in the 1970s, so its pretty basic and there is no preloads or shims of anykind. The only tricky thing is that you have to becareful with 3 small detent balls that can be eaisly lost or misplaced, and the oil galleys only work with the troffs facing up or they will not catch any oil and the oil pump will run dry and the t/case will burn up :ack:

Other than those two things, its a piece o'cake :gap: Everything goes back together excatly the same way as it comes apart. There are no right or wrong ways to tear it down, just tear it down and remember how you did it to reverse the process to build it back together.

ok so heres another question.... i just talked to a buddie who is parting out his ol truck, and one of the few things that is left is the t case. I was curious if there is a way that i can attach his t case to mine? or is it nonsence to try? i know the marlin adapter is smaller, but nothing beats next to free or free. i know this wouldnt have as low of a gear ratio, but like i said before im a poor military boy and unlce sam dont give me much..... i know this would prolly set the second shifter way back, but if its possible id lick to hear how, or your opinions on the matter...
and thanks yall are a huge help...

Semper Fi  :usa:  Cpl Thompson USMC  :beerchug: Do you live in the barracks? or out in town, are you an E1 or E4, What base are you on? I had the same T-case question as you if you want a 4.7 crawl box then get a 23 spline adapter and a turbo t-case so your :pokinit: deosn't break catstrophicaly on the trail and a pos sammy has to tow you out cause no one else will i just asked the same question and I am building the same ultimate as Kyota 4.7 front with 23 spline turbo rear and a 23 spline adapter holding it together  :turtle:

hi there corpral... im stationed at fairchild afb in spokane wa... im a E-3 and im in training to be a survival evasion resistance escape specialist.. so i live in the dorms... its actually a hotel... :)..
its good to see a fellow gi in the world of rock crawling!!!
i was curios how ur build up is going?... if its a pain or if its easy?..
im kinda stuck, cause my buddie will give me a second t case for almost nothing, and if there is a way to hook it up to mine, then ill settle for the 2.28:1 x 2 ratio since ive yet to run into anything all to crazy where i wheel i think it would be more than sufficient... but i need to know the down and dirty first...
if its not possible, i see it being a very long time b 4 i go to a ultimate dual crawler set up:(...
any ways keep me posted on how it all works out...

Hey good luck eascapin  I did same :pokinit: in Pendleton you'll have fun  :moon: Mine is slow I just started over I had and 84 xtra cab and just blew the motor then scored an 83 with a rebuilt motor so I'm startin over but I get to fix what I didn't like  :_oops:  and make it better. I got a 4.7 case and that is pretty good the only reason I want another is I want to compete a few times this summer so I'm doing an ultimate with a forward shift crawl box cause that's what I got good luck and kick some ass! Thanks I know what it's like I'll have a  for ya  :usa:

Dual 2.28's are more than fine especially here in the MW where you'll need the tire speed to conquore muddy hill climbs etc.  Its actually pretty easy to build the whole setup.  I have duals in my 90 now but Im going to pullthem and put them in the 83 and replace the setup in the 90 with 2.28's and 4.7's as its going to be my comp/ serious trail truck.  While the 83 is more of a fun beater trail truck.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

So you are talking about building your own front adapter with a flange so you can divorce a tcase and have it mounted behind your current one, or are you talking about doubling the reduction section of the tcase?

heres what ill have to work with.... two t cases... any tool ill need, a limited budget, time, and a fear of opening up a t case!! :shudder:  :scared: if there's a easy way to just " bolt the two cases together, flange to flange" then thats the easiest sounding way. If not then what is the idot proof way of combining the two to give me the lower gear ratio?.... Im a complete dumba$$ when it come to tranny or t case talk! so break it down or ill get lost :smack:
and thanks for all the paitence and help yall rock!
