engine cutting out
« on: Mar 04, 2010, 03:49:30 PM »
My engine will cut out while it is ideling or when crusing down the road at a steady speed.  By cutting out i mean the engine will act like it is not firing on one cylinder.  I have checked all the vacuum lines, timing, changed the spark plugs and wires. I have checked the archives for past posts about a problem like this and because of it i have also checked the TPS and it is ok.  I have a 88 22R 4 speed tranny.  Any suggestions on what it could be?

I would also change the fuel filter and check the pump.  I had the same problem, except mine would completely die.  I changed the filter and problem solved.

I do have the 22R because I have a carb.  I thought that I did have a tps.  I guess I need to check what the item on the side of the carb that I checked.  I did not think about the fuel filter.  I will change it today and see if that helps.

I just changed the fuel filter and drove it for a while and it did not help.  The fuel filter did need to be replaced.  I dumped the fuel out of the filter and it was brown, like liquid dirt.
