project black sheep
« on: Feb 22, 2010, 01:00:42 PM »
After wheeling with with a few import club, in 07 decided I needed my own rig again. Started with a 4-runner that I ended up hydro locking so moved on to look for a new project. a friend on Long Island found a clean slightly lifted 92 Jeep Cherokee out on long island on Feb of 08. Went down and looked at it on a Thursday night, bought it for $1000, had it on a trailer the next day headed to RC to go wheeling. Wheeled the XJ with a few hours of sleep. The name stems from wheeling with imports and not really liking the TJ driven jeep world so the Black Sheep of the Family was born.

Before I bought it,
Ribucon exprerss 2in BB and 30/9.5 15 goodyears

First wheeling trip 2/16/08 found a few flaws in it. the tires were bald, t-case wouldn't stay in 4wd low power seats were bad and a lack of front recovery points. Made for a great time on the trails needing to get pulled out a few times.

Stuck on trail 11

On the trailer after the run

3-7-08 First on the list was to replace the bald 30in tires. I had a set of 32-9.5 15 TSLs from my old 4runner project (hydrolocked and sold the rig for more then I paid for it) so had them remounted on new crager soft 8 wheels. Pulled off the fender flairs and stuffed the 32s under the jeep.  the ricer side vents stem from needing 3 trucks to pull it up an ice covered hill 2 blow tires and 4-lo not staying engaged.

3-8-08 second trip to RC much better on the trails

3-30-08 brought the jeep home. after spending 2 months at a buddys place in PA

4-6-08 installed a set of front tow hooks

5-17-08 to allow some flex room cut the front and rear fenders

8-18-08, teraflex 1.5in lift shackle JCR roof rack, JL audio sub and box, pioneer head unit and a few other little things installed or painted

10-18-08 little wheeling again, the need for sliders and some armor became apparent

11-22/23-08 North Jersey Jeep Club competition and trail ride. Placed 3rd in under 33 unlocked class

3-14-09 replaced the front tow hooks with D ring mounts

10-2/3-09 installed JCR offroad winch bumper with bulldog 9500# winch

10-22-08 had new rustys offroad 3 in lift springs installed with JKS t-case skid

10-25/26-08 RC wheeling
RTI ramp

1-16-10 JCR Stage 3 rock sliders installed, current state.

Plans for spring, RE trac bar and new LCAs (both waiting for warmer weather for install.

That looks like a good project you've got there! It didn't even occur to me to race my jeep but I think that would be a hoot! I'll have to see if anyone is doing that in my area.  :driving:

thanks man its a fun trail rig, as for comps might do another one later but would like to build a little better rig to do it.

Next up: new steering linkage to replace bent parts, rear lunch box locker and upgrade from 27 to 29 spline shafts.

you dont need new lowers or uppers when doing 3inches though its a good time to replace them as the bushings are normally shot and if you get better arms with flex ends you get more flex

Figured I'd update this with some of the work I did threw the fall.

It now has a RE adjustable trac bar and bracket, new lower control arms, new shocks all the way around, swapped the rear axle with a 29 spline 8.25 with an ausie locker, did a b*std pack in the rear and now sitting on 32 11.5 KM2s

as she sits now
