I am planning on building a tube chassis for my willys jeep and am concidering two tubing options.  Standard requires the strength of 1.75in 120 wall dom.  I am concidering 1.5in 188 wall dom.  I want to know how the two compare in strength and weight.   I have seen alot of beat up chasis with 120 wall tubing and thought the heavier wall would be more resiliant but dont want to sacrifice strength.  So if you have a way to know the differances in strengths and weight please pipe in.

2.0 .120 wall weight  8.02 lbs per foot and in a 40" length will require 5049 pounds in the middle to bend to the point of no return

thats suprising that the heavier wall is so much heavier and still weaker yet.. just for referance whats 1.5in 120 wall weigh and how strong is it?

Ive said this a thousand times. 95% of the time for 4x4 trucks hrew is fine. Its how you weld it and build the cage is what matters DOM can not make up for poor design and fab work.

dont waste your money on DOM, unless you are gonna build an all out tube chassis rock buggy that is going to see some hardcore abuse

DOM will handle a bashing on rocks far better than HREW will. Rock sliders should always be made from DOM take a piece of DOM and HREW (provided they are the same dimensions both OD and Wall) hit both with a hammer and the DOM will dent less.

Your statment is 100% true, if its applicable, like I said if it hits rocks often use DOM it will last longer. If it's just a brace that see's compression or tension then use HREW. My point is only that there is a difference and its end use should be considered.

there will be a mixture of dom and hrew in this project, all the main hoops will be dom, all the reinforcement will be hrew...  now I just need to locate a good source of tubing.. the main places in montana charge an arm and a leg

mixin it up sounds like a great plan!  save some money, but will be strong where you need it
