Odd V6 third member
« on: Feb 14, 2010, 09:12:02 PM »
Hey has anyone heard of a V6 third member with 4.88 gears and the ring gear is thinner than normal and the housing is offset for the thinner gear.  :dunno: Its like a  :stopit:one of the bunch i think, like years 92 to 95 pickup/4 runner. Cause i got a set of 5.29's to put into and they will not work, cause the ring gear is bigger and the housing don't have the clearence for it. It wont go to the side to set down and mesh with the pinion gear. So if anyone has heard of this could ya let me know or give some input. I thought all V6 thirds in this year range were all mainly the same. Thankx for the help...

The FACTORY 4.88 V6 diff is unique!
- Axle code G144, white pinion paint code,
- generally came in 92-95 trucks/4runners with V6, auto tranny, 31" tires, and tow package.
- Housing offsets pinion towards ring gear, allowing ring gear to be thinner
- OEM Toyota gears are the ONLY gears that fit this diff due to the thinner ring gear. All other gear sets have thicker ring gears and do not fit.
- The carrier (case) is the same as the V6 diffs, so normal V6 lockers, LSD's, etc. will work in this diff

A lot of people are running them. The problem comes if you blow the gears, they are very costly to replace.

I am running one in my truck.. they are actually getting hard to find..

You might be able to sell it and get enough out of it to buy a 4.10 v6 diff and make a few bucks...

I guess i have never heard of those breaking.  I have broken two ring gears and both times the teeth just break off.  It looks to me like the teeth are just as thick as the regular v6 ring gear, so you might not have any problems.
