^They will still be under geared by about 6%(w/5-spd) and about 11%(w/an auto).  How heavy your truck is and how heavy the tire is will also effect your overall performance.

If you want to check out the differences between tire sizes and gears, etc., Drivetrain Calculators will help.

I am sorry to hi-jack this thread guys but I am currently facing the same problem. Im running 4.10s with 33s on my 86 22r right now. Im currently saving up money for my next gear/tire combo. I drive on the freeway mostly and occasionally on the street. Do you guys think that i will get better mpg with 33s and 4.88s or 35s or 37s on 5.29s. I would rather put 35s on my truck because I feel it would be better for the highway. Any help you be awesome thanks guys!!

IMO if you want 35s get them and 5.29s...if you ever step up to 37s down the road you already have the gears.  i dont know which size is better for the highway, but 35s 37s are perfect for the terrain i wheel in, so i live with the highway performance good or bad.

Thats what i imagined. Are you running a 22r? If so how many highway miles do you drive in a week per se and what mpg are you getting. Im not expecting good numbers or anything but thanks!!!

Definitely go with the 5.29's, even if you decide to stick w/33's for a while.  With as heavy as Toyota's are, many w/the 22r(e) find the 5.29's and 33's to be a good match.  The engine speed would be about 200rpm's higher for the 33's then the 35's, so it shouldn't effect your highway mileage at all.

If you want to see what the exact rpm difference is at any speed, here is the Marlin's Transmission Gear Ratio Chart to use w/the Drivetrain Calculators link I listed earlier.

I have 35's and 5.29's in my 85 4runner, great around town but I REALLY wish I had 4.88's on the highway. 65mph at 3000rpm. fastest I ever drive is 70mph, and gas mileage is around 18-19 hwy. Hills still suck just as bad, I still hit 3rd gear every decent hill, sometimes 2nd.. And my 22re has a cold air setup and header/exhaust.

Main reason I regeared was to save my clutch.

I ran 35's on 4.10's and could drive 80 MPH on the highway. Kinda slow going up hills though.

i ran 39.5's with 4.10's.... in town i usually split my gears with my 2nd crawl box.... on the freeway you could fly though! after I got the runner with 32's/4.10's it was much nicer.... just road the 35's with 4.10's and do gears when you get the cash  :twocents:

what do you mean you split the gears with your second crawl box
Think that means you start off with crawl box in low, then shift the box to high while in the same gear, then to the next gear

Since my last post I scored some 37's which measure out to 35 and 3/4. Those and 5.29 = dead stock gearing. Drives great, speedo is dead on. I have a feeling im going to want 4.88's when I get the 3rz in though.

first box in 2wd low, 2nd to 3rd to 4th to 5th then crawl box back to 2wd hi/3rd gear..... pulls like a semi!

Can this be done while moving??  I always wondered that.

everyone i talked to says with a gear driven it will grind a little.

With a stock chain driven unit it is not an issue going from 4-lo to 2high while moving.

If you are only swapping engines there wouldn't be a need to regear the diffs, doing so would only consume the extra HP you are gaining from the 3rz.
