automatic-to-Manual tranny swap ??'s
« on: Nov 29, 2004, 12:10:51 PM »
I have just bought used ultamite dual t-case set-up by marlin and now I am ready to swap out the auto to the (BigMike recommended) R151F. But someone told me that when you convert to manual that you also need to install an ECM from a manual truck. Is this true? My rig is a 1988 4Runner with 3.0 V6 fully loaded. Electric everything. --Or-- if I can stay with the same ECM is there any tips for any wiring woes ya'll could give me that has maybe done a similer swap. Any help is very appreciated.
New project--1988 4Runner Currently stock, but not for long!

I have no experience with this, but I've heard that the only confilts with using the automatic ecu is that you have to trick it into believing you are in park all of the time so it will start. I have seen auto MR2s converted to stick and they still used the auto ecu and had no problem at all. Performed just the same as any other manual car.

My 85 runner was auto 4cyc. efi and I put in a manual and all I had to do was jump the to wires to fool in into thinking it was in park like mentioned above. I left everything else there just in case. You could try unplugging everything from the tranny and jump the park wires and try driving it around (it worked for me), although it is not as hi-tech as your newer one.
