locker/welded question?
« on: Feb 03, 2010, 09:27:30 PM »
so i have an 84 toy with an aussie locker in the rear and open front and i am in the process of doing my ring and pinion. i have the rear done but havent gotten to the front yet. so my question is should i move my already built/broken in rear with locker up front and weld the rear end before i install it? i do a decent amount of street driving but nothing to far. what do you guys think about wleded rears on the street? :headscratch:

How much do you drive on the street, and how aggresively?

If it isn't driven on the street much, or if you drive fairly conservative, I'd go ahead and weld the rear.  Offroad, you'll love having that locker up front in conjunction with a locked rear.

There are some people that have welded the front, since its only used offroad (typically) but personally I'd stay away from that unless you've got hydro assist.  I've got a spool in the front of my truck (D60) and it is a pregnant dog to turn in 4wd.  Hydro assist is definitely on my list.

If you run a welded rear, you're going to chew up your tires a bit more than normal, however if you drive faily conservatively, as mentioned above, you're keep that to a minimum.

I am running hydro assist so I don't think a locker up front will be to much trouble and I don't think that I drive very aggressively on the street so I guess I'll get to welding... . Thanks guys

Welded rear is fine if you aren't DDing it or don't drive it far.

im welded rear and i dont drive it much on the road maybe like once or twice a week and it still eats tires pretty quick but like blackdog said the more conservative you drive the less wear
