Marlin Crawler High Steer kit vs. 3" lift
« on: Jan 24, 2010, 06:45:33 PM »
Hey everyone, this is my first post but ive been on yotatech for about 2 months. Anywho i have an 85 4runner (22re, 5speed, 3" rough country lift with 33" procomps) and really want to get a high steer kit. My options are all-pro offroad, trail gear, and marlin crawler. Im trying to go all marlin crawler for my offroad needs, however im reading a concern about running less than a 4" lift. Im trying to avoid lifting it any higher at all costs as my current setup works and i have confidence in it. I would rather trim fenders. So im looking for some examples of 3" or less of lift with the high-steer kit, all brands are applicable. Thanks guys

I was told that you can run high-steer on a 3 in lift.  By the way, what is the width size on your 33's and did you put 4.88 and did you upgrade your birfields?

if you have future plans of gettin better leafs for example marlin leaf springs, do hysteer then. if you did hysteer right now with rough country leafs and then in the future decided to do leaf springs that move your axle forward, which is what you want, you would have to move your steering box more forward so as to not have tie rod/drag link clearance issues.

Reply #34 he has a similiar situation, high steer with Pro comp 6" replaced with TG springs.  He discovered he did not have to move his steering box forward after all.  If you have any questions PM Hilux-1983 hes a cool dude and will be happy to help you.  Searching will bring up more than you ever wanted to know about high steer.  Good luck.

they're 12.50's still have stock gears but im going to make a big purchase and im going with a ratchet locker rear and debating on a LSD for the front, also i wanna go 5.29's. I plan to get skinny 34s or 35s AKA pizza cutters. Looking at the 30 spline longfields for birfs.

can't this all be avoided by initially installing the IFS pump really far forward on the frame? Or is this a disadvantage having it too far forward?

THe "pump" doesn't get installed on the frame - that part is on the motor.  You want to install the IFS gearbox on the frame for hysteer.  From what I've seen and heard, I see no dissadvantages to mouting your gearbox as far forward as possible.  You just need to make sure that your pitman arm/tierod ends to frame and spring clearances are good.

I cut out a small section of the double wall portion on my radiator core support and then hammered what was left to make more room to move my steering box as far forward as possible on my 2nd gen.  I'm running Marlin's 4" kit with front hangar and have no steering clearance issues.  I will be setting up my bumpstops accordingly though.

Why do TG's spring suck? I've seen all brands run and I can't say ones better than another. IME been hit and miss.

As for hysteer and stuff, I run TG 3" personally and my buddy runs his own custom front packs with even less lift, we both rock hysteer. It doesnt matter what springs you run, you can still use hysteer, the only downfall to running less than 3" of lift is you dramatically limit your uptravel which is limited by running hysteer in the first place. But on that note, you dont want to go negative on the springs anyway so it doesnt matter. When they hit level there's room for the links.

I run 1.5" lift springs. Everything cleared with a flat pitman arm.

As for what springs to run... I have had VERY VERY poor experience with buying components from ANY vendor unless its some desert race shop, a very basic fab shop (like a spring hanger) or MARLIN!

If you want your :pokinit: to run for 100k miles... buy everything marlin sells. If you need something else, buy the part from Toyota.

If you want your :pokinit: to run for 3k miles... buy some other brand.

Trust me... I've done this... convinced myself that since I never heard of a problem online that the parts were fine. Guess what... the parts broke.

Buy marlin parts.
