Topic: Rust Question

This a very vague question I think. But, what is the best thing to do to rust that is a little bit worse than surface rust. Is there a product that will completely deaden it to bare metal? I have to drive thru this years winter but I am NOT driving my 4runner next winter and want to have it for the most part not that rusty.

Sand it down to bare metal with sand paper FIRST. If you dont sand it the rust will just continue to eat away at the metal.
Then paint it.

I know POR 15 is really good stuff. do you have to sand down for that too?

Also, ive heard of products that you paint on and it turns the rust to bare metal.

rustoluim paint no sanding needed, use a primer then a paint to match. When steel rusts its because its exposed to oxygen.  So a good pain job with no pin holes is needed.

  Or rust bullet, but with either you need to remove the flaky rust and have it pretty clean.  Rustolium WILL NOT stop rust, if painted over rust it will only allow the rust to continue working under the seal, eventually rusting through.  Seen it happen in many different applications, usually because people believed that rustolium meant sealolium.

THen why does it say say apply right over rust? there are two types as well, one is designed just for that. Its got fish oils in  it to penitrate the rust and seal it.

Maybe they've changed something, but I've seen it applied right over rust and seen it rust even worse.  Then again, I'm only talking about marine applications so

Well in marine corrosive its not just water and the steel creating rust. But you have galvinetic corrosive. When you get 2 different types of metal touching and a electrolite you create a battery. Ones a annode and ones a cathode. So it wll still corroded painted or not. You can actually take a volt meter and detect a current flowing. I tested my aluminum rack and my bed. Between then I get .3 volts.

Rustolium has to different primers. One for clean metal and one for rusty metal. You need to use the primer that's made for rust and it will work, but it's best to clean the loose rust as much as you can. Using just the paint or the clean metal primer won't do it. Also with the rusty metal primer you don't want to use it on non rusty areas unless you let it dry for a few weeks, perferablly in the sun. Otherwise the fish oil will just go to the surface of the paint and make it harder for the color paint to stick.

I suggest sandblasting  if you can to clean up the area befor painting

We used to use muriatic acid (available at pool supply places) to get all the paint, rust and even grease off of parts. If you leave it on too long, it will also pit the metal some. Problem of course is that you have to wear alot of personal protection gear (glove, splash guard, respirator etc), the toxic fumes, and the disposal of the stuff, but it works great. you can add it to a bit of water to decrease the acidity (always add acid to water, never the other way) Let it dry out for a while in a *dry* (low humidity) environment, and primer/paint as desired. If there is too much metal damaged, weld in some extra and then grind it down flush.

one of my friends did some rustwork on his 93 4runner. he used COMET and he claims itll strip rust to bare metal. so i am gonna give that a try once spring comes around.

This is how i usually fix rust.
1. Sand back the effected area making shore all rust scale is removed.
2. Then use a rust converter to remove any left over rust or oxygen left in the steel.
3. Etch primer the area, 2 coat. The hi levels of zinc in the primer will help stop it oxidizing again.
4. Then a "Hi-Fill" primer.
5. Sand and paint.

I would highly recommend POR 15 as draws moisture out of the steel as it cures.
It also come with an instruction for surface prep.

POR15 will bond best to bare metal that's just started discolor from rusting............

Sand to bare metal, spray with an epoxy primer sealer, then paint. if you plan to primer with sandable primer or body work. Epoxy primer and seal before painting.

Never bondo over bare metal ! Metal sweats and will come back to haunt you !!
