« on: Dec 21, 2009, 09:56:56 PM »
My wife got me the new axial ax10 RTC for x-mas   , thought id show it off....I already upgraded the steering to the aluminum links and changed out the pinion gear to a 12t and the spur gear to a 90t.  I want to get a dig tranny for it and some bigger tires but here it is as it stands, Let me know what yall think

Nice! Welcome to the 1:10 addiction  :gap:

Do you plan to compete with this thing eventually? Personally, I think dig is a waste of money unless you plan to compete. My friend put it on one of his Axials and we wheel together regularly, and he rarely gets in a situation where he needs to use it. Don't get me wrong, it is nice to have. However for the money you'd spend, you could upgrade a lot of other stuff instead that will help you more often and in the long run. Either way, you are going to love this thing  :yesnod:

You don't really have to upgrade anything if you don't want to, however as our rock courses evolved I quickly found the limitations to most stock axial parts. Mine is pretty indestructible now.

I'd upgrade:

The front C knuckles to clockable aluminum ones.
Aluminum steering knuckles
A hi-torque metal gear servo (axial servos crap out quick)
Aluminum bent lower links
Upgrade the upper 3 link y bars to aluminum and a 4 link (axle wrap is a PITA with a 3 link)
heavy duty metal driveshafts (I went through about 8 stock DS before I had enough and went metal, they strip and break easy)
Shock alum crossbar (adds rigidity to the chassis)
I would also lower your battery down and mount to the bottom of your battery plate instead of the top if you can move your electronics around. You'd be amazed at how much a difference that will make
Those are good tires, but by "today's" standards in the RC crawler world, they are small and there are a lot of bigger, better tires out there now. I rock the HB Rovers, and LOVE them. Big, wide, and grip all terrains excellently
BTA Steering (I don't have it, but it would be very nice)

Again, that seems like a pretty big list. Even though parts are cheap, it does add up quick. I would say prioritize certain upgrades as you wheel and break. Upgrade as you see fit. Some upgrades, like the battery placement, are free. I would say that is a pretty good list though in terms of what in the end, you are going to want to change.

I have the Integy HD shafts for the Axial, and they are great shafts for the price ($25), however, they require a little tweaking to get them to work right. I had to swap the all threads around and use locktite to keep them from coming out, but otherwise they are tough.

http://www.integy.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_prod.html?p_prodid=5839&p_catid=

I would recommend the MIP Ax10 CVD shafts however, they have beefy splines and are a higher quality than the Integy shafts. These are $40 a pair.

Vent the rims with one 1/16" hole on the back side

Cut the fenders :gap:

Helpful mod i did was slip the bic pen tubes on the lower links (after you get them) and the tie rod. they work kinda like sliders, they cut down on the rocks grabbing into the alum.

and today im gonna go pick up the Hitec HS-5645MG Servo

The best next to free upgrades besides those were move the lower links to the inside of the skidplate and inside of the axle brackets and replace the steering servo horn with a 3 hole aluminum one. I have it on the 2nd hole and it has way more steering tq with just as much turning angle.

I run a dig tranny and it is AWESOME!! I have 2 axials and I pretty much only drive the comp rig now just because of the dig. I use it all the time just because I can. There are lots of better upgrades to do first, but I love my dig...

Yeah, you can just cut the stocker. I used an exacto knife. Here is what I did. I inboarded the links on the skidplate, while outboarding the shocks on the axle end.

I used the stock screws IIRC (though longer may be necessary, did it a long time ago) and then cut the wider, mounting end of a few body posts to use as spacers. On the axle end, longer hardware is definitely required.

reading that just made my brain numb haha im sorta tired at the moment so you might need to put it in simpler terms

i just did mine a couple days ago.  you will need to get  40mm long screws for the axle end to put the links outside the factory mount area.

Here is a link for the ckrc stage 2 build, most of the mods you can piece together at ace hardware. It tells how to cut the skidplate and swap the shock bumpers, another good free mod.
