Rear Shackle Angle>> with pics
« on: Dec 01, 2009, 12:26:30 PM »
Alright just a quick question from a noob. i got my rear suspension installed and was wondering about this shackle angle.. its the marlin 5in springs.. i was told to move the rear shackle mounts back 2 inches which i did and then i was told on the front spring hangers for the rear to only move them up 4in. is that where i screwed up or does everything look fine?.. i still dont have all the weight in the rear, still needs the tail gate and two propane tanks. just shoot me some quick replies. This is going to be a Dual purpose rig. lot of road time and some trail time as well..

Wow yeah front shackle hanger is bad.  Looks like you need to move your front hanger back about an inch or so...

not 100% sure. what factors could affect this angle? I dont have drive shafts in yet. so the axle could be rotated some, not sure if that would change the angle.. could the shocks be mounted wrong?. Now these are 5inch springs and i use the stock shackle holes since i didnt have to cut new ones. and the spring hanger is mounted up flush on that cross member.. so what else could it be??

If you switch to a shorter shackle it will make that angle relax. Have you wheeled on these springs? They will settle more.

i bought the kit used from a guy, cause he was linking his truck up.. so all he did was unbolt the shackles from the frame and spring hanger and left everything else attached to the axle and gave it to me like that.. and i just gave him my stock axle housing..

Is the front bolt on the hanger in the same spot as mine? If so, pull the bottom leaf and drive it around for awhile, wheel it 1 or 2 times. It will settle. Don't trip, it will settle.

Put a shorter shackle up front and the angle with be better. After your cycle those springs some, it will look even better. Easy Fix, or cut off and re-weld your hanger.

basically thats why you tack weld first and check everything.. dont trip though. just get either longer springs. shorter shackles. or let it all settle a bit. mine settled 2 inches in like a week after i was done. i actually had to move my hangers back it settled so much. its all part of the learning process.. good luck

I hate to be the one to say this, but my marlin springs never settled....

Looks like everything is in the right spot tho. I would measure your springs from eye to eye and see what you get...

I agree that front shackle angle is crap. I would also suggest wheeling it and trying to flex the front as much as possible to see if you can get them to settle.. If that doesn't work, I'm not exactly sure what the overall length on the marlin springs are but you could get some of the long toyota rears I believe off the 89 toyota 2wd and swap out just the top two leafs into the marlin springs, I don't know if anyone can verify this but I do believe there are a little longer and do move your axle a little further forward than the marlin's do so they should give you a better angle without having to cut off your hanger. And last, you could possibly try running a banana shackle in the the opposite direction?? Not really sure hoe that would work out though.. Just some food for thought!  :beerchug:
