Topic: T-case gets stuck ?Help?

 :help:Well heres what i got. Its an 85 pickup with a 22r stock 5-speed trans and stock t-case with stock gears. My problem is every once in a while when i drive my truck in 4 hi when i go to shift back into 2wd at a complete stop in N i cant shift it back into 2wd. So i have to push the shift lever as hard as i can and when it finaly goes into 2wd all u hear is a clunk but than everything is fine. Any idea on what would cause this or if this is normal? or is there a certain way to do this? All my previous trucks were all push button.

next time this happens try driving the truck forward or backward doesnt matter just a couple feet and then try shifting again and see if that doesnt work. probably easier on your t case than forcing it.

the cause is you driving in 4wd on hard surfaced roads,  it is not designed to drive like a "push button car" 

NEVER drive with it in 4hi or 4 lo on hard surfaces, whether it be hard packed clay, granite or asphalt DONT DRIVE IN 4HI ON HARD SURFACES

if it binds up again just back up till it smoothly slides into 2wd

Thank you but what machanicly causes this bind? Why does driving in 4wd on hard ground cause this? Also while in pismo i drive off the beach into town often prob 5 miles max will it hurt to keep the hubs locked but the t-case in 2wd bc it can become a pain to get in and out of my truck to unlock them everytime i drive off will this do any damage?

You can leave the hubs locked in 2wd.

While movin in a straight line, you can switch back and forth between 2hi and 4hi...

Mine shifts hard like you say, but I've found all I have to do if it won't shift back to 2wd while stopped is push on the shifter a little and start slowly driving forward like toyotaaddict said.  Usually only takes a few feet.

To kinda get the gears to slip back into place?

I think it has to do with all the combined play of the gears, kinda binds it up. I think going in reverse helps this best. Mine almost never goes into 2wd on its own. I always reverse 2-3 feet, and then it slides in smoothly. It also helps to have it on a flat surface. I would NEVER force my shifter in, my buddy did it once with me in the truck, and oh my god, it sounded horrible. Shame on you for abusing a toyota that way

I just put it back in gear, let off the clutch kinda hard with my hands off the steering wheel, and it'll unbind the drivetrain...  the wheel might go kinda crazy but if you only go a couple feet then its fine

Unlike an open diff when it binds the spider gears will turn and release the bind. If you have a locker it will ratchet when it binds. A spool will scuff the tires to fix the bind. Now your tcase cannot release the bind that occurs from front to rear since both the front and rear turn at the same time. If you were to jack the front off the ground that would release the bind but since you have hub locks you can just turn them to the open position. Or you can just back up until the bind is reversed. Unlike AWD vehicles that have a slip feature intigrated into the tcase a Toyota tcase is a direct drive and there is no slip. Most importantly if you drive on dry pavement with it in 4wd anything and the hubs are locked you are asking for a failure.

Great answer thank u. Also when i am in 2wd at the begining of every gear exept 5th you can hear a clunk that comes from what i am suspecting the rear. Is this normal with the 85 pickups? i took the third out and took it down to the local shop and they said all was fine.

Also what can cause vibrations when i let off the gas in any gear. Like it vibrates enough to make your vision shake and than if i turn the sterring wheel to the point to wear i have resistance wile going down the road the steering wheel with shake.
