I'm just getting impatient with the recent bit of nice weather... there is a 22R for $200 but if I've got the engine out, I'd rather upgrade while I can.

$500 would get the front axle without hydro.   :disturbed:

Looks sketchy, I know...  But maybe there is some good stuff there?  I know if I was selling an engine, I wouldn't post a picture of it sitting precariously on its oil pan, tipped to one side.  But whatever.

Also interesting:

I would imagine this would cost very little to make it run in your chassis...  Although, you have to wonder about reliability with that one.

I am not even thinking about engines anymore; gonna concentrate on saving money, re-do suspension, re-do steering and re-do the flatbed. Taxes are coming back but I'm not getting much since I didn't work the last 2 years... awesome. I might be able to get a few PBR tallboys to help drown my sorrows.

This oughta be called "84 reg cab Redux"...  ::)

FINALLY DID SOMETHING THIS WEEKEND!!!!!!

Moved the steering box forward a few inches.

Next time I'll finish up the welds, trim more metal, smooth off the edges and paint/undercoat the whole mess.

Got the RUFs on; shackle angle still sucks. Need new bolts/bushings. Pitman arm hits the little round bump-stop thing (for now, chop chop soon), they seem to flex pretty easy compared to whatever was on there before. There's an inch difference in height on them too (the old springs... one's 1" shorter than the other) so I have some tweaking to do to get this set up decent-like.
Going to get a 96 trans/case tomorrow; selling the left drop case and my stock trans (I hope). Keeping the forward-shift case and am working to get a top-shift locally for cheap. Might have to do top-shift conversion later on; as in next year. I don't have the $$ for duals yet and I wanna do 4.7s when I build em since it'll be the "right thing to do", having the cases out and apart and all that good shiite.

There you have it... woo hoo.

Didn't get the 96 R150 trans, I can't handle too many things at once... I get confused easily.   However I did sell the carb/air cleaner and my spare spindles (Thanks, Sparky!) so I have a few bucks for metal for this piece of crap; probably getting 3/16" plate for misc braces/brackets/whatever. I really need to re-do the shock towers.

This weekend:
cut sliders (with new Sawzall!!!!!!!)
lower cab
trim inner fenders for shock towers
get long bolts for RUFs (to replace screwdrivers   )
and whatever else I can squeeze in.

Crap, this is a boring-ass build! Sorry gang... lack of money equals lack of fun stuff for the rig; if it were up to me I would be posting about how much I love the new 3.4 engine instead of all this crap. I oughta ban myself.

Not sure if you still need an engine or not, i havent read your whole thread but i thought you recently had engine issues, and going off your last post you would love to have a 3.4 but lack funds... if you want a FREE 3.4 let me know, its in my garage, come get it out and its yours.  I live about 20 miles west of Colorado Springs.

It does need work, but hey its a free starting point that you can slowly spend some cash on and get it done.  It was a buddies, he was going to rebuild it and use it in his FJ40 but he has changed directions.  Send me a pm with your phone number if you are interested and i'll try to give you some more details.

Hopefully, I'm trying to have my truck done before Cruise Moab, its a long shot. However it should be done in time for the Jamboree so if I'm in town (travel for work) I should be there.

Awesome!  I knew something would turn up for you Dan.  Hopefully it won't need too much expensive machine work... but if it does, at least it will be a little more worth it than the 20/22!

Y'think?  :gap:  I'm still trying to pawn off all my 20/22 leftovers... they're getting better at tripping me in the shop. Sold the 20's carb, might have the 20R head gone soon too. I just want it GONE! Go away, puny 4-cyl crap!

>>Dan

:shhh:  Don't jinx it; I still have to get it before Volcom.  :burnout:

A while back I priced getting parts from rockauto.com to rebuild the 20/22 and it was over $800 before machine work. I cannot justify spending that much coin on a carb'd engine that will still be under 100hp at best. F-it.

I got a new timing kit and all new seals for my 3.4 on ebay and it was $130. I also have a new rear main and a ton of other parts if you need a source for things. You will love the power. I find myself doing 90 on I-25 without even realizing it and then having to slow down really quick

Gonna pick me up a 3.4 tomorry  :willynilly:

also tomorrow I'll snag a 96 R150  :driving:  since my G52 won't work with a 3.4 (as far as I know--not that far)

so I guess I'll order up a 5VZ to RF1A adaptor 'cause chain-drives just plain suck all over the place.  :kickbutt:

Got the 5VZ; an enormous THANK YOU goes out to Okiyota for taking pity on my sorry excuse of a truck. You need to finish up that Trekker and come to the Springs; King's Chef on me... not the big place, the castle on Costilla.

Didn't get the R150; no answer/no call back. Awesome... saves me $100 for now.

Checked it out some more today; looks like new headgaskets are in the future. Oil is funky looking (not 100% death, just lighter than normal), compression was about flat across the driver's side and there's crusty rusted-looking stuff in the t-stat housing and other coolant lines. I'm going to rebuild it; damn the torpedoes... full (ish) rebuild ahead!

I'm new to 3.4s... is this little dealie for the popular dipstick mod?

Looks like something goes here (long studs) but I dunno what:

Leaky water pump:

Crusty stuff in t-stat housing:

Funky oil, gonna open the filter tomorrow and see if any bearings are in there:

Wrong plugs...

REBUILD!!!!

Its gonna be awesome with that 3.4! Im havin the same troubles that you were with the 22r. It just costs too dang much to rebuild for not much power. But since my truck is my DD and wheeler I can't really give up the mileage the she gets. So it looks like a 4 cyl rebuild. I can't wait to see the new power plant in your truck! Good luck!

I'm getting pretty much the exact same MPG with my 3.4 that I did with my 20R.  But I get where I'm going a hell of a lot faster than I used to. :D   A 3RZ is a great mix of power and fuel economy if you're concerned with that.

Yes! I have no idea what should go there; haven't seen an assembled 3.4 in a long time.

I'd like to get the parts, just don't know when I'll have the cash for them. Work has picked up a bit, so maybe sooner than later.

Apparently I forgot how to check compression... kinda need a starter to spin the engine; hand-power won't get accurate numbers. Duh.  :smack:  I may be borowing an engine stand this week from a buddy so we'll see what the oil pan looks like on the inside. I opened the iol filter and it's just old/dirty; no bearing material at all. Maybe I jumped the gun saying "head gaskets"... here's hoping!

I also found a local-ish yard with a 2WD T100 oil pan in case I absolutely HAVE to do that with my hi-steer; some builds do, some don't.  :dunno:
