I may have to undo that if I cut the cab to fit the 37s... or 40s if I ever get bigger tires. Also thinking about getting new shackles (that aren't home-made/sketchy) but getting them shorter to lower it all down a bit. 63" Chevy springs out back for sure though... soon enough.
Got to swap the front axle and re-gear/Detroit the rear before we go out again; it shouldn't stall at all after that; 5.29s and 4.7... yeah, stupid low, here I come!  :screwy:

May the Toyota force be with me... I'm starting to tear apart the axles tonight!  :yikes:
I found out I can bring the thirds into school for the drivetrain shop to set the backlash for me; hope they know what they're doing... but it should be okay. I think the instructor does important stuff like this, not the students.
Then it's just a matter of selling the current front axle and geting the 5.29 locked third and I'll be  :turtle3: for sure.

BTW if anyone has first-timer hints/info please share with the class.  :beerchug:

So I got the first axle out... easy as pie. But now I am thinking of keeping the Lok-Rite and selling the Detroit for simplicity of the swap and more money. Thoughts? I know the Detroit is "the best" but... I'm kind of scared to tear apart two axles.

Color me scared...

I like the lockers... but couldn't imagine steering with a welded front. It's interesting on the highway with loose u-bolts too.  :yikes: The ass-end jumps a little over bumps, but I fixed that yesterday.

I was told the truck has Detroits front and rear but I was also told the springs are Marlins, which they are not. I don't know how much the guy did during the year he owned it or what was done before he got it.

Is there a way to tell what locker you have without taking apart everything? I doubt it but figured I'd ask...  :dunno:

I'm going to start pulling the axles apart today and take the thirds into school tomorrow so they can be set up by someone who knows what they're doing... which is absolutely NOT me.

Matt I left my big green hammer with those SAE wrenches; was looking for it last night to pop the tie rods off. I brought those wrenches to adjust my mirrors and lights if needed; not to work on the truck, I know better than that.

We'll find out as soon as I figure out how to get the birf out. Everything is off down to the spindle housing (?) and all the grease is oozing out now; pausing for dinner. And a cold one.  :beerchug:

all that holds the birf in is a snap ring in the hub and the entire knuckle.... right? u should be able to take snap ring off and pull pretty much everything out without taking it all apart

I got all the axles out tonight... stumped on how to get the third member off. I hit it with a 5 pound dead-blow; didn't budge. The pinion doesn't have to be removed, does it? I wouldn't think so since it's one piece-type of deal inside the carrier.
One axle's grease is darker than the other so I suspect a leaking axle seal? It's on the short side so it looks like it should be easier to fix. All axles came out fine; only one gave me a slight problem more than the others... except the first one. Now I consider myself an expert at replacing Birfs; got the other 3 out in under an hour.

I hate when people are full of steaming dog :pokinit:... so I was told the truck had Yukon 4.11s in it along with Detroits, right? Well guess what?
bull :pokinit:   bull :pokinit:   bull :pokinit:   bull :pokinit:   bull :pokinit:Worng on both accounts! Pulled the third from the truck, lo and behold the spiders are Fn WELDED and the ring gear says TOY 4.88 fer fek's sake.  The pinion has 8 teeth and the ring has 39 if anyone wants to do some math. Awesome... so I'm betting the rear is welded too. Looks like I'm running a Lok-Rite up front after all; now I don't feel bad about the car having charging issues and dying on him when he drove it home. Karma dude, it's a mega-biatch and it'll get ya! Just ask Earl.

At least I'll be properly locked in the front now... no wonder steering was such a PITA with the hubs locked!    :hammerhead:

I have the front axle (complete) listed on craigslist for $400; need to sell that so I can get the rear third/5.29s. Otherwise I'll be driving in front wheel mode until then, which we all know is  :stopit: I have a spare set of spider gears/carrier if you need it too, no gears though.

Tonight is "put it all back together" night...

I think he's in Meeker? Anyways, it's still for sale; I kind of doubt it'll go anywhere for a while, I got 5 spam emails for it from craigslist already but none from real people. Awesome, everyone wants something for nothing around here.  :shake:

I also have a mostly complete 22RE; needs timing cover (may get it welded), computer, air flow meter and oil pan. New gaskets too, but that can be expected when it's all apart. Also has a clutch and flywheel...

Now the 5.29/locked axle is on and shimmed for better pinion angle too; hope to sell that axle soon to get the locked 5.29 third from Josh (where I got the axle from). Also installed 2 fuel filters; one at the tank and one between the frame and intake. Noticed a vacuum line (or something) was rusted off/through near the fuel tank; got to figure that out tomorrow. From what I can tell it's for that LPSV-thing so it may go bye-bye soon. I'm considering dropping the fuel tank to check all the lines along the frame since it's packed with mud. Saw another rust spot on the frame right near the old bed mount. Great, just what I need... a rusty frame.

Lifted my rear axle and spun the tires; I hear clicking which means there's a Detroit in that there diff, right? Both wheels turn the same way so I know it's not open, they don't spin 100% together so it's not welded like the front was. I was looking over the emails I got from the PO; he said "It's got 4.11 gearing in the diffs, Detroits front and rear, it's the carbureted 22R with a stainless Pacesetter header, Marlin low gearing in a single transfer case" too bad they're no-name 4.88s though. Wonder if he got ripped off or what?

At least it's in better hands now.  :therethere:
