Oil Pan Treasures (HELP!)
« on: Oct 10, 2009, 08:20:51 PM »
I found these plastic pieces in the bottom of my oil pan. Chain guide or tensioner maybe? Any ideas or suggestions on where to start?   :help:

yep, the metal ones are the only way to go.  my buddy picked up an 87 runner last week. he got it for 400 bucks because there was water/coolant in the oil. we pulled the timing cover off last night and because of broken timing chain guides and a streched chain, the chain wore a hole completely through the timing cover. it was so bad we could poor water into the radiator and it would immediately run right out the oil pan drain!

Sweet! So I may need a cover too? Is this something easily found at the dealer or should I just go to the local shop? It looks like there is two guides in the manual, can I get them both in metal?

I found those when I rebuilt my 85 engine. Of course I put a new timing set in w/ steel guides because I was rebuilding it, but if I was in your situation I would put a new timing kit in with metal guides. I got mine from LCengineering, and I think ENGNBLDR sells them too. Mine broke bad enough that the timing chain got enough slack to jump teeth and cause issues. The pieces also got sucked onto my oil pickup tube = no oil pressure and since the chain tensioner uses oil pressure to stay pumped up, it let the chain go very slack. Timing chain covers, if you need one, can be had from junkyards. Or try putting a wanted post on here. I can always find one if I need one, they shouldn't be too hard to get a hold of.

Here is mine:

it would have to be makin a lot of noise for a long time to go through the cover like that so you should be good
if not find a 2wd at the junkyard thats usually the only 22r i ever find there

FYI if you are putting a new/different than original timing cover on, it is supposed to be decked with the block. If you are swapping the cover with the head on and the engine still in the vehicle then no big deal, but if you are rebuilding then you should deck it.

You can also have your original timing cover tig welded up, I've pulled 22R's apart and found welded covers.

That is an ENGNBLDR kit. It uses one steel guide on the driver's side. The other one is still plastic.

Good choice, but don't let ignorant people steer you away from checking with the dealer either.  Superior parts cost more, but I've also checked parts prices there, kragen and vatozone, and had the toyota part be cheaper or about the same.  Some people just assume the dealer will be more expensive

And, if you are nice enough, the guys at the dealership may give you discounts. I have also gotten a few free used parts from them like a TRD cam and some other stuff. I also get a business discount at o-rielly's because I am nice to the guys there plus I have a student discount card through the college for autozone and NAPA. Being kind pays off.

I used to work at a dealership in parts. I hate the term stealership. I mean some parts cost more like stated above, they are 100 times better. And I would sell you the right part the first time. I usually could help find out the problem too. If you were nice or had big boobs id would give a discount too.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

I have a buddy that works at the dealership, I will check with him. I don't think that the part I need will be found at the dealership. Gaskets, o-rings, and chain will be there but the metal chain guide will not.  I will send my wife to the dealership to see if she can get a better price on the rest of the stuff. :)

Check out the dealers website for discount coupons....

The one I goto usually has a 15% (sometimes 20%) coupon for any parts..........

Looks good right?  I got the metal guides from engnbldr.com and they look good. Some of the guides I saw were all metal, the ones I got from engnbldr have plastic on the chain side. Can't wait to be done. I got an estimate of a $1000 to have a shop do it. It has been fun doing it myself.  :hammerhead:

It would be good to change your water pump while you have that part of the motor apart. I also installed steel timing chain guides.

Yah, I found a kit online that was very reasonable with water and oil pump so I am just going to do both.
