3rz swap in 1991 Isuzu Amigo.
« on: Oct 09, 2009, 07:31:03 AM »
got this isuzu amgio for free ( well sort of,  did the side job on one of my buddy car.  he didn't have the money so he gave me this amgio for the job)   Found a lot of thing wrong with it.  One  Head crack.   Two,  a lot of parts missing off the engine.   So Went to U-pull it ( auto wreck yard)   Was looking for Isuzu trucks parts.   Most of the parts are missing or had been taken  off.    Then I came across this 92 Toyota 4 runner.   What got my attention is that.  a five speed r-150.   I was thinking about swap a 3.0 in my amgio.   Well Guess what.  I went ahead and took the transmission with all the drive shaft and transfer case with it.  paid  150 buck for it.   Got home and look it up on the web about 3.0   I came across this website marlin crawler about 3rz bell housing.   so did a research.  and found myself a whole 3rz  from a wrecked Toyota Tacoma.  got the engine and ecu etc for $1000.00  Will Post  photo here soon.

Holy cow I'm jealous :drooling: I have an Amigo on Yotas. The main thing it's missing is the 3RZ (to adapt toyota trans, mainly)... I can't wait to see your build! I'll be following along  :beerchug: :beerchug:

got my marlin 3rz bellhousing and Heavy Duty bearing cover plate and Heavy Duty Shifter Seats for my R-150.   Got to tell u it was cover with old grease / dirt.   using oven cleaner stuff to get all that junk off of it.   Had order all new seals for it also.   took everything apart.  replace the bearing cover plate and replace with marlin heavy duty one.  everything look great inside the transmission.   I dont know what I got when I got it from U-pull it.   It could be good or bad.  Lucky it all good.   I put everything back together.  Using honda bond (silcone) for the seal between the two housing.  ( i work at honda dealership,  the best stuff they use for honda stuff).   install new seals front and rear.   now it ready for install in my amigo.   Also Have to shop around for small stuff like starter,  alt.   That was missing from the engine.    found starter from local auto yard.   Went back and found me a alt off from 1993 Toyota Previa.  it look pretty close.  so bought that.  only paid 15 buck for it.   Went to auto parts store to have it tested.   it test really good.   came home and try it on my 3rz.   it look like it lined up right.  on top where bracket.  I had to add spacer.  which is no big deal.

also have to get new flywheel.  it used to be auto.  also got new clutch.  I took stuff apart on my amigo to get ready.   I had to ask my buddy to set up a day to do the swap.  He is a welder.  had helped with my other project in the past.   Very hard worker.

The toyota swap was fairly simple - it's the wheel base that'll bite ya in the :moon: . I use a stock 2nd Gen Toy front driveshaft in the REAR of the Amigo, and a huge front. You're doing it right though - do the engine swap first, then do the SAS. The steering is a little pain in the butt, but nothing that can't be jimmied to work.

Got the oil pan, oil pick up tube and  oil dipstick from T100 2wd.   install those on there.   also inside the engine doesnt look too bad.     Took the Isuzu over to my friend's house.   we started to work on it.   Took the body off the frame.  It will be a lot easy to work on.   Went to parts store to get some exhaust pipe,   Got aftermarket cat,  muffler,  some bending pipe.   will post some picture here soon.

got the old engine/ transmission off with no problem with the body off.   u can see we already custom our own engine mount plate.   this was all in one whole day.

got the body back on the frame,  to make sure it fit between the engine and firewall.  found that the transmission hit the bottom of the floor board.  so we made a 2 inch body lift.   also got all new hardware.  all the bolts that are rusted away.  so this was a good time to replace the body bolts and add two inch lift.

I am using stock isuzu amigo speedo cable,  found out that it fit nice, it screw right in.  look like same company make em for some reason.   but not sure about that.   I am using stock tacoma power steering pump.   Found that my old 2.6 power steering pressure hose and return hose are on other side of the engine.  So I went to wreck yard and found out that Isuzu 3.2 V6 are on other side.  So I took that.   Swap the hose.   the hole on the pressure hose that hook up to the tacoma power steering is a bit too small.  Had to drill it a out a little.  and it fit.   Now did the wiring job.   I am using stock tacoma wiring.   so I can plug in the ecu.  the only problem I have is the one plug for ground and power.    It took me three days to finish it up.

Now trying to figure out what to do with the driveshaft.  I did the measurement.  found that front and rear are almost the  same length.   So I took the isuzu driveshaft and toyota driveshaft and took it over to driveshaft shop.   Told em how long I want it and which one go to which.    They got it done like in one day.   Found out it cost me 150 buck each.  :willynilly: I thot it would cost me around 50 to 60 buck.   Oh well.

I had been thinking for awhile,  I was thinking of putting TRD supercharge on it  or this turbo kits from www.koracing.net/viewproduct.php?folder=103&product=479  Does anyone here do a turbo on 3rz before.  I know I had seen 2rz drag car with big turbo set up.   But what about low boost on a 4x4 truck?

So far What parts I had use to make my amigo to work.   I am using 3.SLOW clutch fork,  slave cylinder,  custom clutch line.   I am using my amigo stock clutch master cylinder.  for Fuel line,  I had found a 97 4runner.  took the whole fuel line out.   Had to put it in to make it work on my amigo.  But got it to work.   Also didnt have  3rz cooling fan.   So I found one from 3.SLOW 4 runner at u- pull it.    Came home and try to put it on.  I realize it dont fit.   SO what I did was trim the back fan where it hit the pulley.  I trim it  till it flat even.   Will post a picture of that.   Got the wiring all done.   Got it fire up.   Yes I do have some little bug.   working on that to get solve that.   Clutch work great.   Cooling fans no problem.
