Cool History....1979 Limited Edition
« on: Sep 24, 2009, 11:16:42 PM »
I was just browsing craigslist for older Toyotas, and found this ad.  It was pretty interesting, I didn't know the history on this.  I'll paste in the informative text this guy wrote and a picture, in case the ad expires...otherwise click on the craigslist link below.

"As far as the limited edition goes, there were only 1079 toyota dealerships in the US in 1979 and every dealer got one of these trucks. There is a plaque on the dash that labels #579 of 1079, it also says limited edition on the sides under the Toyota emblem."

I hear ya!!  That truck is truly a collector's item, you would think it would only go up in value over the years.  I mean c'mon....it's probably one of the first 1000 Toyota 4x4 pick-ups to make it on to American soil.  THAT'S RARE!!!!

I'm just wondering though, if the dealerships were getting the regular model 4x4 pick-ups around the same time?  I wonder what the door jam tag would say for the manufacturing date!?  Because that would say alot about the first ones built too.  As i've seen with all the older Toyotas, September marked when they moved on to the next manufacture year.  So a stamp of 9/78 would be the earliest manufacture date for the 1979 4x4's I would think.

I'd hack it up and wheel it.  Nothing is sacred when it has sheetmetal and a transfer case.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

I was going to say but White Trash beat me to it, some one will buy it and flatbed it and exo hack it all up.  What about the Stouts were those not sold in the U.S prior to 79?

Stouts were never a 4wd available from the factory.  There were a few companies doing 4x conversions prior to 79 but yota came out with the first 4x and this is an example of that.

A friend of mine bought a toyota 4x4 p/u when they first hit the dealership in Napa in the 70's and had nothing but problems. The front diff was from a jeep and the gearing was a bit different from the rear making wheeling interesting.  He had to carry two spares, one for the front and one for the rear.  It would roll on it's side in a heart beat, we used to walk beside it when on a sidehill or slope to grab the off side to prevent the roll. The front springs, way too stiff and thick, would break in half about every 5 thousand or so miles.
We did take it through the rubicon solo three times though, last trip we bent the tie rod into a U shape twice. Pounded the thing straight and slid the highlift jack handle over it to make it the rest of the way through.

That is pretty sweet!  I'd keep it about stock height, set it up with flexier springs, lockers, 235/75-15 mudders, upgrade the brakes, swap to an L52 and run it for the simple pride of it.

1978's were called wolverines ,they were hiluxes, with jeep running gear ,built by Downey,in S. Calif.,after the Stout ,Toyota had two body styles before they came out with the 1979 style, youd have to check the serial number to know when this truck was imported,I had serial number 14**,at the time they could get almost 2000 trucks in a shipment,so it came over with the first shipment

Makes you wonder where #1 of #1079 is.  Is it still out there? Did it get scrapped years ago?

I saw this one a few weeks back on ebay.  It's a 1981.  The ad said it had original paint, and was supposedly (of the SR5 trim packages being offered) a "California color scheme" option.  I've seen a couple of these in person.  Haven't deceided whether I like them or wanna...:puke:

I will say it's one of the cleaner 81's i've ever seen!!!  Said it had super low miles, and was towed behind a motorhome most of it's life...so I guess that would account for the good shape it's in.

My dad's cousin had #124 since it was new until about 5 years ago.  It was that same red color.  He bought it new in Fayettville, Arkansas.  I remember him telling me about the plaque on the dash and I didn't even believe him at the time because I had never heard of that.   This is the only other time I've ever heard it mentioned.

they also made a bunch of red 4 wheel drives for volunteer fire departments,I cant remember how many,Toyota gave them away ,I saw one on E-bay once.Toyota introduced the stout in 1964,then the hi-lux in 1969. Second generation hi-lux in 1972,third generation hi-lux in 1975.1976 they became the "pick-up". Forth generation in 1979.fifth generation was 1984.etc.
