rear locker popping
« on: Sep 23, 2009, 05:40:16 PM »
i have a detroit e-z locker(lunch box locker) in my v6 rear with 5.29's and 37's with a stock 22re.  has been in there for about three years now, less than 3k on it in the past few years, but has had several wheeling trips including rubicon, hammers, and black gulch.  i'm use to the regular popping and ratcheting that it does, but now it does it bad.  as soon as i start to accelrate, it starts popping non stop until i'm cruising, and going around turns, with the tranny in neutral, both back wheels are locked up like a spool, every now and then it will pop and release then lock up again.   i think this last trip to rubicon finished it off. i havn't had time to tear into it yet, but i was just wondering if anyone has ever had this happen before.  i was thinking either broken teeth on the locker, or a sheared pin.

Just had this happen to mine in july. Exact same thing as you.

When i pulled it apart I had broken 2 of the 4 pins, the BIG center pin that goes through the center of the locker, cracked the housing that the ring gear bolts to, and chipped a few teeth off.

awsome.  thats good news.  did you go back to a lunch box style locker?  i was almost thinking about a welded carrier back into it or maybe getting a spool.  truck doesn't see the road a whole lot.  any suggestions?

I put in a v6 3rd with a full detroit. Im running 37's and those lunchbox lockers arent meant to take the abuse.
