Topic: 91 4runner trans not working right

I have a 91 4runner 4x4,3.0, auto trans. When I put it in to (D)drive it jumps forward. then when I drive, it shifts hard, then when it goes in 3rd it doesn't want to shift anymore just goes up on the rpms. Went to have it put on the computer to see what was wrong? they said it wasn't the trans. might be the transfer case. SO I looked at it again. put it in to 4Lo and saw the front drive shaft move took it out of 4Lo drive shaft didn't move. And the 4runner has auto hubs. So don't know where to go from here. thanks

how many miles on the auto?

whats the ATF fluid look like?

IIRC the transfer case uses all its own fluid and doesnt share the transmissions fluid.

check all of your fluid.
if all checks well.... not dirty and at correct levels.

then next check that trans pan filter.

i also have a 90 4runner v6 with the auto trans.
mine shifts perfect and smooth.

but from experience, I'd check that stuff first.

I just changed the trans filter and oil. Oil was black. filter looked okay. Didn't see any metal shavings. still did the same thing. hard shifting and doesn't shift after 3rd. Didn't check the transfer case oil. going to do that tomorrow. Could it be stuck in gear in the transfer case or something.

the A340F is a much better one
