That's the problem, I am not exactly sure. However, I am planning a Moab trip next year for EJS. My attitude is if I am trailering all that way to wheel, I am not holding back because I don't want to scratch/dent/flop my rig. It may come back looking like a tuna can smashed around a roll cage! With that being said I may have to find a way to afford the new rig sooner rather than later if you know what I mean.
so if you wait another year before you get something new and then finish off your current truck  you can pull the engine out of the 1rst gen because it will be finished. so you ll have the drivetrain for the next truck, so if your gonna wait awhile it seems like theres time to do the engine swap into your current rig, and then do it a second time into the new rig whenever you finish of the 1rst gen. :dunno:

i would say 3.4 just so you can use the bell housing to go to a w56 trans and still use the geardrive t-case as a bolt up (no adapters= no hassle) and you wont need to track down a new Axel  and the need to possibly step up to fuel injection on the Chevy... plus the availability of a supercharger for the trd is nice ,cheap and easy to tune

beautiful truck where did you get the cantop

sorry but you cant use a W series bellhousing with a 3.4 motor, you need the R sereis bellhousing. You are thinking of the 3RZ, in which case you would use the W59 bellhousing and w56 tranny.

Well I think I am just gonna leave he rig alone for now and plan to just swap in a 3.4 in the new rig when I get it. If anyone is interested in the deal I will pass it on to you just PM me and I will give you the info.

4.3 headache

I may be a bit biased here, but I love my 4.3. I swapped it in back in 2004, and have had zero problems with the motor/ trans combo ( 4l60e ) Chevy fuel pump modules suck though.

I looked into the 3.4 at the time but the cost factor was a killer. I installed my motor for about $3000 complete with adapters and drivelines. Turnkey running! At the time the best I could do on a comparable year and mileage 3.4 was about $3000 just for the motor. not including anything else.

While I'm sure that price on the 3.4's has come down, a 4.3 conversion is cheaper. Unless your a purist ( like my friend BIGMIKE ) 4.3's fit quite nicely and the power output is well balanced for the truck.

also a 3.4 out weighs the 4.3 by almost 100lbs!!!!

Here's thread on it  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=3062.0
all i want is a little more than i'll ever get!!

My good friend Tommy (4.3 headache) (who I never seem to wheel with enough) is definitely the man you want to talk to if you want to go with the 4.3

I am all for keepin it Toyota but the 4.3 makes more $en$e right now.  I say get a new rig with the power you like and swap your susp/drivetrain into it.  By the way awesome rig!!!

Nothingface5384

4.3 would be the cheapest route,  and when it comes time for a rebuild it'll also be cheaper then rebuilding a 3.4

either way both will give you great power in that truck

I have a SAS'd 99 Tacoma w/ the 3.4 (factory for me) and i LOVE  :ladys-man: this motor. it just rolled past 170k on the ticker and it still runs mint with nothing but a timingbelt and the usual oil changes. It's got plenty of power but more importantly (to me anyways and i suspect most on here), i trust it to no end and as far as a can tell its Bombproof :twocents: :twocents:

lol, llike the above, i didnt read the last posts either.
'99 SR5/TRD Tacoma w/5vzfe. SAS'd with 64" diamond axle (w/ long superset & ARB). about 5" of lift, 305/75 x16 BFG KM1's. Soon to come: 1.5" more lift (6.5"), 35 to 37" tire, undecided at this point., 63" F/F diamond rear, Marlin 4.7 tacobox.

3.4 in I that thing would be sweet. :driving: I would expect to spent 4K to do the swap depending on the deals you get but thats my guess.

you are high, if you let people bend you over it will cost you 4k.
the plan was for under 1500$ into my 3.4 swap into my 79
right now i have everything except the r150, adapter and clutch and i am still under 900$
even  if :pokinit: goes totally awry i will be well under 2k
hold this. . .

Depending on the deals he gets, buys junkyard parts or wants to wait for a cheap motor. I personally dont like putting all the time and money into a swap and using junkyard accesories. My 3rz swap cost me prolly 2500-3500 but besides ther motor everything is new from the dealer. I didnt want to wait and find a wrecked low mile 5spd t100 for 500 bucks like some people do. So i bought a low mile 2002 3rz from a tacoma with a auto.
