Knuckle swap
« on: Apr 01, 2009, 01:30:30 PM »
I'm doing a disc brake conversion on my '70 FJ40, using the knuckles from a FJ60.

If I keep all of the top and bottom shims in their original orientation, will I need to go through the whole process of centering the knuckle to the axle shaft?  I've read that you don't have to re-center everything when rebuilding an axle if the shims are kept in the original place, but I'm not sure if that applies in this case.  FWIW I'm going to use Marlin's HD seals.

I have done it like that in past and it worked fine.   I would still recommend measuring the pre-load to be on the safe side  :turtle3:   No reason for DW

I was definately planning to check the pre-load, which is pretty easy using a fishing scale.  But centering the knuckle to the axle requires a
"special" (translation: EXPENSIVE!) tool that I don't have and would rather not buy.

I have never centered one either. With the HD inner seals you will be fine
