G52 swap into 1st gen
« on: Apr 01, 2009, 01:14:46 PM »
I have an 81 toyota 4x4 short bed 22R 4 speed L45... I would like to swap in a 5 speed... I am parting out my 84  which has a I believe a G52 5 speed in it ... what all would I need to do so swap in this tranny besides shorten my rear drive shaft swap in the 84 front drive shaft and find a new crossmember... from what I have found the G52 is only 4.5" longer than my L45 because it has a forward shift t-case

what is needed to do the swap?
were do I get the crossmember?
will I need a new clutch?

i think you can use a rear d line from a 84-88 shortbed, weld new mounts on the frame to use the stock crossmember.your clutch should be fine, might have to trim your floor bords abit
80 shortbed-22re,w56,Marlin 23 spline dual cases,HighAngle drivelines,RUF/63"chevy's,35''mtr's,30 spline Longfields, Allpro highsteer.87 rear axle,5.29 gears,rear spool,BudBuilt cm, marlin HD clutch,ramsey 8000 winch.

you wont need a new clutch
i cant remember if i had to change the slave cylinder or not
make a custom crossmember
shorten driveshaft
cut a little out of the floor for the shifter

i think thats all hope it helps

is the G52 swap A good idea rather than try and track down a L52

I already have the G52
bud built makes a crossmember I could just use u-bolts to mount it to the frame says it works for the W56 swap
whats the difference between the W56 and the G52...
how can I tell what I have?

I went from an L52 to a W56 and used the same slave cylinder.    (if this helps at all..)
