ARP Studs - Hub & Knuckle
« on: Mar 02, 2009, 12:01:53 PM »
I'm considering upgrading my front axle to ARB hub and knuckle studs to go along with Longfield Hub gears that I'm planning to install soon.

How difficult are the studs to install?  It seems like it should be fairly simple if the old studs come out?

Any thoughts?
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

very easy, I popped the steering arms loose and put two nuts on the old stud, tightened them against each other and they backed right out. The arp's I got have an 8mm head on them, they go in and out much easier. Also, I used some lock tite when I installed them. I would highly reccomend the knuckle studs on tires over 36 as ive heard of many people sheering them off.
this my man lysol, fresh out the joint

I have both the Knuckle and Hub studs on order from Front Range Off Road Fabrication.  I'm thinking about replacing all of the misc. items while I have it apart so what do I need?  The stud kits come with the studs and nuts so it appears that I need the following items:

KNUCKLE
8 EA - Knuckle Stud Wavey Washer
8 EA - Knuckle Stud Flat Washer
8 EA - Knuckle Stud Cone Washer

HUB
12 EA - Hub Cone Washer (8mm)
2 EA - Hub Dial O-Ring

I'll also be installing Longfield Hub Gears so do I need any of these parts?
2 EA - Front Axle Outer Snap Ring
2 EA - Front Axle Inner Snap Ring
2 EA - Birfield Snap Ring

Where do they go?

once you have it all apart you will see what you need to replace. if all your old hardware is good just reuse it..... but i guess if your spending that much whats an extra 100.

Ok, ARP studs have arrived.

What is the torque spec for the knuckle studs and nuts?  I think the knuckle nuts get torqued to 80 ft-lbs, but does that apply to the studs as well.

Also, what is the torque specs for the hub studs and should I install the studs with some level of locktight?

80 is right for the steering studs are just tightened until they bottom out, do not torque them. I did the hubs to 40  i believe it said it was 35 according to the FSM. ARP studs can be torqued higher though sue to the strength

edit- use locktight on all of them

How difficult is installing the Longfield Hub gears?  I don't think it should be very complicated, but any tips would be appreciated.

Hub gears are easy. Take the hub off and remove the snap ring holding the stock hub gear. Install the longfield hub gear and re-install snap ring. Then re-install the hubs. And its done

Well, I manged to lose my last locking lug key before I remember to get rid of them and this morning was when I figured out that the final one was missing.  Got up early, made the trip over to a friends shop and now I'm home after scratching our heads for a while trying to figure something "easy" out.  I'll have to visit a tire shop and let them remove them.

Everything we tried in an attempt might have worked IF the tire/wheel wasn't there so... :smack:

We opted to not get destructive at this point, I was fairly sure I could find the key at home, but no luck so far.

One time I had to grind flats on the locking lugs and use a socket.  It sucked but was better than waiting for a spare in the mail.
