I want To jump My truck without breaking it
« on: Sep 21, 2004, 01:16:24 AM »
Hey guys, me and a buddy were on our way home from work (near Mojave CA) And were racing along some old dirt roads that are scattered all over the area. My stock suspension truck on 33's did fine, however I wanna fly over those berms and land like the baja 1000 guys do. I realize this is usually left for the pre-runner guys but there has got to be some info out there on 4x4 high speed racing. Any suggestions?  Or should I just stick to the rocks?

The truck is an 81 SA. Im guessing the ifs trucks take the hard landings much softer than the SA. Eiether way im determined to find a way!

Find all the 7s class Toyota's you can find.  All the solid axled trucks use leafs of course being a stock class.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Airing a truck requires a long travel suspension and some serious dampaning. There is a air bumpstop out that under normal driving its not in play but with a hard landing it acts as a second spring to absorbe the impact to prevent a hard bottoming out. To air a truck you better be ready to spend some cash.

Hit places like
http://www.desertracing.com/
http://www.race-dezert.com/ (check out the videos on that site)
http://dezertrangers.com/  Cool vides here too and some Toy trucks I think it's the barstow 2002 they have a trail becide a road and video a Ford running about 70mph on the dirt soaking up 2-3ft mogles. Very cool. The TCI test session is also cool because they have the skins off a Class 8 and you can see the suspension working.
Hit the links pages on the above sites and you can get down to some of the race shops and look at the trucks and suspension.

I have a friend that jumped his 80? yota.  He had 37 in MTR's and a really flexy suspension.  It bottomed out every time.  Jumped it 7 times in one day.  It didn't break either.  but it was built by Troy Muse of the Pirates.  He then sold it and decided he wanted to go faster all the time.

Thanks for the links, Im pretty much bored out here in the middle of nowhere and I cant keep my truck off the dirt roads and washouts. Ill look into the heavy duty bumpstops and bypass shocks etc... I saw a  tube bender at harbor freight, might give that a try and take a welding class. Im new to this stuff but its very very addictiong!

i remember hitting a nice pothole while rallying around at 50mph in my old 2wd '84.  sent me flying about 3 feet in the air and completely bottomed out the front suspension.  probably not great for the truck but fun nonetheless

Un sprung weight (your axle) is your enemy with high speed wash board stuff. The IFS would be better to a point on a 4x4 or a 2wd with a locker of some sort in the rear. Those class 8's running 130mph in the desert are 2wd.

That s not to say you cant make it work reasonably well but your goign to have to work at it and your probably are not going to get great results till you go to a link suspension and loose the leaf springs.

Maybe you want to find a cheap 2wd for your DD and prerunner it and use the 4wd when you want to do technical slow speed stuff. 2wd with a glass fenders and the Fabtec suspension would be really light and good on Gas.

i'd look for an '84-95 2wd.  mainly being that you can upgrade the IFS on those more than you can on pre-84 trucks.  some kind of double i-beam would be pretty cool on a 2wd toy :ladys-man:

don't want to be a dream crusher so I will just remind you that
large jumps at speed are fun and dangerous so a goood roll cage is in order
a long travel suspension is in order
with long travel shocks made for the application properly valved and mounted
your cost will vary.
I would stay away from the bender from harbor freight they are junk mostly
your axels will bend unless you truss the crap out of them
most prerunners have a low slung suspension with extreme amounts of droop to soak up the landing and to keep it stable at speed.

qoute: I have a friend that jumped his 80? yota.  He had 37 in MTR's and a really flexy suspension.  It bottomed out every time.  Jumped it 7 times in one day.  It didn't break either.  but it was built by Troy Muse of the Pirates.  He then sold it and decided he wanted to go faster all the time.

it was probably the tires that acted as extra springs

I've jumped mine as well a few times with no ill effects but wasn't going real fast and the landings were always rough
almost rolled it one day due to it bouncing sideways upon landing and it scared the crap out of me. (didn't like the idea of rolling at 50+ mph with out a cage)

I decided to not jump any more  for fear of carnage and death
rolling in the rocks isn't usually violent I did say usually but rolling at speed usually is and you can't get much air with out speed.

one other thing it is hard to build a rig for both worlds rock crawling large tires lots of articulation and and clearance
prerunning smaller tires long arm long travel suspension system low profile type set up for speed stability extended shock towers high compression bump stops

so I am with the other guys who suggest you build two rigs one 2wd for the prerunning and one 4wd for the rocks
2wd with a locker and a good suspension is fun in the sand and jumps
but why not just go buy a rail buggy and be done with it they are jumpable and fun to boot fully caged and iof set up right will bring you years of fun and you can still keep the truck and build it for the rocks
too much spent to go slow
too much spent to stay low
too much spent on the go
but it's fun you know

yeah, I jumped my 89' like 3 feet in the air in mojave a few years ago (before SAS). When I landed it ended up hurting my back. So I converted to SAS and crawl. If i wanted to fly, I'd buy a dirtbike since it's probably the cheapest way. I have seen some really sick solid axle prerunners though. Good luck with the project and keep us posted.

If you jump your truck, you will probably bend axle housings. On my old truck I bent up two sets of axles. The first time I jumped it, I bent a housing front to back, and up and down. We had to torch the tubes open just to get my innershafts out. Both hubs were reamed out rendering them useless, and one of the birfields a gouge in the side of the bell deep enough that I felt the need to replace it. That's not to say that if you race down a dirt road you will bend a housing. You probably wont. But I was flying "over those burms like the baja 1000 guys do," and the stock front end couldn't take it. Also just for reference, I was running Downey 3" springs, a 1" drop front hanger, Rancho bump stops, and 12" travel Bilstein 7100's with the external reservoir.

Thanks for the replies guys. Im looking to keep it as simple as possible, however I understand it takes quite a bit of work to keep it reliable. Its difficult to find solid axle pre-runners on the net. Im wanting to install bypass shocks and all the bumpstop stuff etc.... well see!

Mine is the blue 84 4x4 - #797 that runs in MORE and MDR. My team mate runs the #738 truck. Making a fast and reliable SAS truck that is capable of getting air can be done, but takes lots of work. Build a good roll cage out of steel tube (NOT pipe), good suspension seats (PRP, etc), wear a helmet. Our's has masive amounts of axle trussing, Yarnell air bumps, King bypass shocks, Deaver long travel springs, full cage, PRP seating, X over steering, 33" Baja TA's, and even some tricks from Marlin in there. Truck is capable of "flying over the burms" all day long.
A low budget suspension can be done with 63" chebbies, Toy rears in front, several resevoir shocks, trussing, and lots of time. PM me if you want more info.
