TPS issues?
« on: Jan 12, 2009, 11:00:44 PM »
My buddy's '85 4 Runner doesn't have the correct timing adjustment, I can't get it to go below 12 degrees with the terminals jumped. The distributor gear is in the correct position.  It has a tremendous flatspot while accelerating and is the most dangerously doggy 22re I've ever driven... and that's saying alot! I've had several people tell me I should adjust the Trottle Position Sensor.

Questions are:

1) Do you guys concurr with the TPS diagnosis?

2) How do you adjust the TPS?

The timing chain may have jumped.  (mine jumped 2 teeth).

After this it was really, really slow and the timing was advanced.........

See if the timing chain guides still exist.   If not, I'd say the timing chain jumped and needs to be replaced along with steel guides  (you might need a new timing cover too; if so, consider the LC double row timing chain conversion)

That's a good idea...  It has a very fresh re-man.  The re-man may however have been put together by monkeys.

I had thought about cam timing from a shaved head but it seems more of a larger tuning issue.
