462 Mini Crawler Builds (AX10, SCX10, LMRC, Wraith)
« on: Jan 10, 2009, 11:39:11 PM »
I decided to stop cluttering my 1:1 build with my mini crawler crap, so here is the build up for my AX10 RTR that I got about 4 months ago.

I started with the Axial AX10 RTR kit. Out of the box it is set up to be a rock racer more than rock crawler. So before I even ran it I swapped out the stock 27 turn motor for a 55 turn Integy motor and the stock pinion gear with a 14 tooth gear. Drove it like that for a while but my suspension was way too stiff and I hated all that chrome bling bling.

Here it is in all its stock glory.

Cut about 2/3s of the foam out of the tire and used a dremmel to cut a hole in each wheel. This simulates real "aired down" tires and helped out a LOT. Also painted my rims while I had it all apart.

Upgraded the stock STIFF coils to some Team Losi super soft coils. I also cut the body up for clearance, installed the front locker and upgraded the stock steering servo to a high torque model.

Oh yeah, I got tired of those plastic links real quick :gap:

Not to mention that flimsy plastic steering...

Got the aluminum 30 degree bent links front and rear as well as the aluminum upper Y bars, lower y bar mount and steering arm and tie rods. In the process I modified my stock skid plate and inboarded the upper link mounts. On the axle side I outboarded the shocks and inboarded the links. As it was set up the stock shocks and aluminum links seemed to interfer with each other while flexing so moving the links in more gave them perfect clearance and now there are no issues.

Decided to cut out my Chevy Silverado body that I bought about 10 years ago for my Stampede. My buddy makes trailers for a living and scored me about 10 feet of brake line. I am going to fab up some sliders and a stinger bumper for it.

Mini-carnage...Tore one of my upper y bar screws out which resulted in my shock cap tearing off. Need to invest in some metal bodied and capped shocks.

Got some new junk for the crawler. After breaking my 7th or 8th stock driveline I decided to get some beefy shafts. I saw these Integy shafts at the hobby shop and they look pretty good. They have about the same slip as the stockers but are all metal and don't come apart at full slip. I also picked up a few spacers I had been needing them and bought the red steering rods to match my links. My truck is pretty colorful though heh since I can never find everything in the same color. ah well i don't mind really. Lastly I got clockable C hubs for my front axle which raised my steering up quite a bit. The combination of the proper spacers and clocked C hubs I got the perfect steering angle dialed in and gained a lot of clearance for my tie rods.

These things are pretty heavy.  :yesnod:

I also lowered my battery and antennae down finally. Going to get some nice lipos eventually but for now this will do. Made a big difference just dropping it that much though.

Looks good. I did the same thing with my battery....works well. People keep saying I should buy the saddle packs for the front axle, but I have 5 brand new 4200 stick packs. I will be leaving it under the battery plate for now

Yeah same here, I bought this thing as a cheap hobby so I would only have to dump small amounts of money into it from time to time, I had several stick batteries already from my earlier RC days and I figured this would be the best bang for my buck.

So I pretty much trashed my Silverado body, I ended up tearing all 4 body mount holes completely out, so I am back to rocking the stock body unless I decide to fix the Silverado. Good run while it lasted. :gap:

Bought some new rubber today... white label HB Rovers

They are signifigantly larger in both height and width to my stock Axial Rock Lizards. I don't know if they are going to be too soft, I am going to be running them with full foam and BB weights, not cutting the foam on these. We will see how it goes.

Yeah, thats what I have been hearing. I feel I pushed the Rock Lizards a lot further than most people are willing to try, siping them helped out quite a bit actually. I was also running them with about 3/4s of the stock foam cut out so that helped a lot too. Need to mount this last tire and go hit the rock pile

Went out to a sweet river spot to crawl, China Dam. Water is still moving a little too fast and cold as ice but there was more water flowing than I expected, so the river season shouldn't be too bad this year, I hope  :crossed:

The Axial has been tweaked a little bit. I flipped the shocks upside down for the hell of it. Cut and lowered the body.

Nice, how do you like the drivelines?  I have the MIP steel drivelines for mine.  I was running a saddle battery on my last buggy I had but I went to a Lipo for the new one I'm building.  You have some sick areas to go crawling, makes me kinda jealous (I wonder if my wife would let me do some crawling on her

Its about a mile hike to the spot we went but its well worth it.

Haha

I like the Integy drivelines. I bought them impulsively at a hobby shop because I had never seen them before and they were only 30 bucks a pair. Most other drivelines seem to be about 80 bucks. So I bought them, then read everyone hated them online. But after using locktite on all the allthread in the driveline, they work great. If you dont use locktite with them they will come apart frequently. I locktited mine up about 2 weeks ago and have probably 5-6 hard abusive hours on the trail since and so far they have not come apart. For 30 bucks I think they are worth it. Locktite is a must though.

I figure I have about $500 into it, some of my parts were hand me downs from my friend. He has a bunch of these so I pick up cheap used parts from him every chance I get.

That $500 has been spread over the span of 6+ months though. Excluding the $330 initial cost (RTR kit + 55 turn motor + tax) upgrades have only run me about $170 or so and that cost has been spread over the course of 4 to 5 months.
