Losi Micro Rock Crawler joins the stable
« Reply #120 on: Jul 08, 2011, 06:11:31 PM »
Added another RC rock crawler to the family. I ordered the Castle Field Link so that I could program the AE2 on my Honcho. The Losi Micro Rock Crawler Bind N Drive happened to be on sale for $70. So I decided to give the LMRC a shot. Something to wheel inside my apartment since the 1:10s are too big to do anything entertaining inside. Also picked up a Spektrum DX3E DSM 3-Channel radio to use with the Micro since the sale price was on the BnD which comes RTR minus a transmitter.

This thing is tiny! So far I am surprised with how well it does out of the box. Definitely top heavy and needs to be lowered. Also the wheelbase is too short for my liking. Stock battery life sucks, maybe 10 minutes tops  per charge. Since everything is so cheap for these little things, I plan to upgrade the battery to Lipo. Also on the list are to redistribute the weight lower, mess with the suspenson, stretch the wheeelbase, tweak the tire foams, and paint and/or new body. Otherwise in it's current form, it works really well. Pretty much everything in the apartment has turned into a potential obstacle course.

Painted and trimmed the body, trimmed the tire foams, added 2 oz per tire, reversed the treat pattern, and relocated the battery to the front axle. Definite increase in ability, just needs to be wider, longer and I need to soften the suspension, its too springy. Crawls much better now though.

Nice collection of crawlers man. I need to find someone close by me to take mine out with. Kinda boring crawling by myself all the time. My brother wants to get a losi mini for inside the house.

Thanks man. Same with me. All my friends back home (100 miles away) have these but none of my friends down here do. Thats why its kind of nice having 3 now, other people can drive them if we go to the lake or something and don't have to have one of their own, they just wheel one of mine. My 4Runner is back home so if I didn't have these to tinker with and wheel I'd probably go insane. The Losi mini is great inside, there are no rocks within 20 minutes of my place so I can wheel it whenever I feel like, where as the 1:10 Axials are boring inside, too big.

agreed the axials are to big to have any fun inside. hopefully once my dual cases are done i'll be exploring, wheeling, and camping through out az so i'll bring it along to mess around with.

Swapped over to AX10 wheel hexes, installed some axle wideners and tossed on some aluminum knuckles.

So for my birfday my girlfriend got me tons of parts for my Honcho...

I got:

Kyosho KT201 2.4 ghz reciever and transmitter
Trak Power sodering kit
3 Racing automatic winch (which can be controlled by the Kyosho remote)
RC Rock Armor front aluminum winch bumper
Toyota Hilux body, grill, decals basically everything except the back portion of the cab
Two new Technical products compact nimah batteries
Onyx100 modern charger (was using a charger that I got when I was like 12)
And some aluminum and plastic for random fab work and to create the backing of the cab

So the plan is to go full scaler with the Hilux body. I don't care that the Hilux is more overplayed than the Honcho, I've always wanted one and it looks great mocked up. I found out my problems I was having were due to a motor wire that had become disconnected but still looked hooked up. After sodering it everything should work fine.

So my question is what should I do for a paint scheme on the Hilux cab? I will be using the Honcho bed and roll cage still. I was thinking either grey with black Sr5 stripes like my Runner's stripe style, or doing the white/red/yellow/orange Toyota racing. Any other suggestions or ideas?

Body mocked up. Think I like this height but might lower it a little bit more. . Need to make body mounts and mounts for the grill. Going to run the Honcho roll cage/bed.

Pretty sure I am going to go with this paint scheme for it.

Got a Rooster Crawler ESC/55T motor combo and a Castle Link 10A BEC. Putting the 55T and Rooster Crawler in the SCX10 and the BEC and my old Honcho reciever and transmitter in the AX10.

Still a lot of work to do on the Hilux cab but since I have the new electronics in and bumper and winch mounted I threw the Honcho body back on for now.

Still need to do some adjustments to the new electronics and figure out the ins and outs of my new transmitter.

Yup the remote I have has a seperate winch controller built in so all I have to do is run the winch off a seperate battery and I will be able to winch in/out on command from my remote. Needs a tougher winch hook though as I don't see the stock 3Racing plastic clip taking much abuse.

I was thinking about entering that. The dude at the RC store was telling me to come out and give it a shot. I need to get some bugs worked out, take more foam out of the tires, do some better waterproofing, hook the winch up to a seperate power source, and get more scale items but if I can pull it together I'll definitely give it a shot.

Thanks man! You know I don't remember who makes these wideners. I picked them up at the local hobby store and I tried to search but these were the closest I could find. Look the same but mine weren't red.

http://www.tcscrawlers.com/2.2-Wheel-Widener-for-TLT-1-XC-or-CC-01-Pajero-Touareg-p-16233.html

I'd love to put wraith axles under my SCX10. My only complaint with the wheel wideners is that because there is slight play from the axle shaft joints (that isn't really noticable stock but is with the extra width/leverage), there is a little bit of slop in the front wheels. Since this thing is mostly a crawler not a hauler, it doesn't bother me, but if you wanted to go fast it might make it hard to track straight. Eventually I will swap in Wraith axles though.

Worked out most of the kinks in the Honcho. Overall happy with it as a purpose built crawler. Haven't hooked up the Winch or finshed the Hilux cab yet, might have new plans for it.

I wanted a more go fast crawler so I picked up a Poison Spyder Wraith RTR. Same as the normal Wraith RTR except comes with a Poison Spyder Wrangler body, BFG Krawlers and Trail Ready beadlocks. Got all aluminum steering and links for it for starters. Also got a 60s Bronco body for it, but now that I have that as well as an extra Honcho and a Hilux, I am not sure what body I am going to use for which rig. For now though just going to upgrade the links/steering and wheel it how it is.

Left to right: 2.2 AX10 buggy, 1.9 SCX10 Honcho, 2.2 RTR Poison Spyder Wraith

New BFG Krawlers and Trail Ready Beadlocks

Upgraded to aluminum links and steering. Added two lights to the front bumper.

Took it out in the rocks today. The BFGs hook up great in the rocks. Overall very pleased with this package.
